[Bug 730912] New: Gramar rules need to be changed for "openSUSE".
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=730912 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=730912#c0 Summary: Gramar rules need to be changed for "openSUSE". Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: OpenOffice.org AssignedTo: bnc-team-ooo@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: carlos.e.r@opensuse.org QAContact: cwei@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- I have just been translating the openSUSE release notes for the “121 Release announcement” on request of Kostas Koudaras, using LibreOffice. LO has spell checks and grammar checks. Nice. I don't like to see red or blue waving lines underlining my handywork. When the word “openSUSE” happens at the start of a sentence, LO warns that the sentence should start in uppercase, which is absolutely correct in Spanish. They are right, that's the rule. No exceptions. There is a Royal Academy organization taking care of how Spanish is used: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_Academia_Espa%C3%B1ola, http://www.rae.es/rae.html. Thus, you have two options: a) You allow the spelling of both OpenSUSE and openSUSE for your logo, as the grammar rules for each language specify. b) Convince the LO people to add an exception to the rule and allow “openSUSE” to be written at the start of a sentence commencing with lowercase.

What I saw the problem in English is something like a paradox when openSUSE comes to the first word of a sentence: 1. Open a new document and type openSUSE<spc> => it will be auto corrected to OpenSUSE because of the capitalize correction of initial character. 2. Then I saw the OpenSUSE is marked with red wave line, which the spell checker considers it is a misspelling of openSUSE. Thanks! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=730912 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=730912#c2 --- Comment #2 from Cédric Bosdonnat <cbosdonnat@suse.com> 2011-11-17 09:08:15 UTC --- There are two problems here, and I can influence only on one of them. 1/ the caps is automatically added due to an Auto-correction option that you can unactivate. Click the "Tools > AutoCorrect Options..." menu, then go to "Options" tab and uncheck the "Capitalize first letter of every sentence". 2/ The problem with the grammar checker would need to be raised to LanguageTool (http://www.languagetool.org/) which is the grammar checker used in LibreOffice on openSUSE. I don't know if they can handle exceptions for rules. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=730912 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=730912#c5 --- Comment #5 from Carlos Robinson <carlos.e.r@opensuse.org> 2013-05-17 03:02:40 UTC --- It is the autocorrection feature of LibreOffice, and probably others. It is ok to correct the first letter of a sentence to be uppercased, per grammar rules, but there has to be a list of exceptions for trademarks: iPhone openSUSE etc. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It is trivial to test it. No, I will not report against upstream LibreOffice. I do not personally care.
