I fear that the same fate will face me when i try to use a smartcard for storing a luks-key. e.g. that the prompting for pin-code will also be lost in kernel messages. Any chance of having those messages going ONLY to boot.msg ? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Today, after uninstalling the nouveau drivers and rebuilding the initrd, I rebooted. To find that my encrypted root (luks on /dev/sda3 which provides the pv for lvm) went crazy. By crazy I mean the 'Reading all physical volumes' message was looping VERY FAST and I couldn't enter my password. I tried everything. Eventually, using rescue mode off the DVD, I got in, and made a "monster" initrd. That works, but so far, it's the only thing that lets me boot. More notes: I finally found that adding 'sd_mod' to /etc/sysconfig/kernel (in the modules section) works.
WHy isn't mkinitrd *automatically detecting* that the root device will require sd_mod ??
No idea. What's the output of mkinitrd (maybe mkinitrd -v gives more insight)?
OK, so I found out at least some of the problem.
setup-luks_final.sh is buggy: it's adding 'crytomgr' as a necessary module (there is no such module)
*sigh* cryptomgr is sometimes needed and sometimes not. It's not clear to me when it is needed. See bug 535013. Adding cryptomgr even if it doesn't exist doesn't seem to harm though.
91-luks_final.sh is also buggy!
This line: cryptmodules=`sed -ne '/^module/s/.*: //p' < /proc/crypto`
is wrong. Some items in /proc/crypto have "kernel" as the "module" (ie, they are built in).
Should be fixed, yes. Not fatal either though. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The "Kernel Modules" list is missing: ahci, ata_piix, edd, fan, libata, processor, scsi_mod, sd_mod, thermal, thermal_sys I'm going to guess and say that edd, libata, ahci, ata_piix, scsi_mod, and sd_mod are all pretty important. I know for some laptops thermal is fairly important but for this one it's not (as far as I know). Works fine for me. Maybe a problem with your local setup (rm /etc/sysconfig/initrd maybe?). Note that kernel-desktop has sd_mod built in and therefore doesn't have the module. Better ask on the mailinglists for help rather than bugzilla. The mkinitrd problem is a different and unrelated to the original report anyways. http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=576056 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=576056#c12 --- Comment #12 from Jon Nelson <jnelson-suse@jamponi.net> 2010-08-03 15:30:40 UTC --- Aha! Previously, I had to have /etc/sysconfig/initrd with these three lines: root_luks=1 luks=lukspv luks_lukspv=/dev/sda3 I moved that file out of the way, modifed /etc/sysconfig/kernel to have no kernel modules listed, and made a new initrd. Everything works! I will note that in the *absence* of /etc/sysconfig/initrd, the mkinitrd process *adds* the following logs: enabling LUKS support for /dev/sda3 (lukspv) So perhaps that was the problem all along. Thanks! -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
