[Bug 738532] New: PDF-PS conversion shakes letters
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=738532 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=738532#c0 Summary: PDF-PS conversion shakes letters Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Printing AssignedTo: jsmeix@suse.com ReportedBy: sommerluk@gmail.com QAContact: jsmeix@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:8.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/8.0 It seems that there is an error in the PDF-PS conversion. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open the attached test.pdf in okular. It displays perfectly. 2. Print the file. Actual Results: In the printer output, the letters are moved. Expected Results: It prints like it is displayed by okular. My printer is a Lexmark Optra M412 on the parallel port. I've tried it with the PS driver, with GutenprintPCL6 driver, with HPIJP driver, with laserjet driver. Always the same result. I've done in Okuluar (with test.pdf loaded) File->Print->Printo to file (PS) and I've saved the result in test.ps. There you see also the shifted letters. So I assume that this is a problem of the conversion from PDF to PS, and not a problem of a specific printer driver. (BTW: When I print test.pdf with acroread, it works fine.) (BTW: This isn't the first problem with printing that I had in openSUSE 12.1. I've yet seen that parts of the output simply were lacking in the printout.) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=738532 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=738532#c3 Johannes Meixner <jsmeix@suse.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |jsmeix@suse.com Platform|x86-64 |All AssignedTo|jsmeix@suse.com |vuntz@suse.com Summary|PDF-PS conversion shakes |pdftops conversion shakes |letters |letters --- Comment #3 from Johannes Meixner <jsmeix@suse.com> 2012-01-11 13:51:36 UTC --- When you print a PDF, the CUPS filtering system runs first of all /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops which is only a wrapper that calls /usr/bin/pdftops which actually converts PDF to PS. I can reproduce it when I run with your attachment #468903 ---------------------------------------------------------------- pdftops test.pdf pdftops-test.ps ---------------------------------------------------------------- then pdftops-test.ps contains misplaced letters. Therefore the root cause is either in pdftops or perhaps your test.pdf is somehow broken. "pdfinfo test.pdf" shows ----------------------------------------------------------------- Creator: Writer Producer: LibreOffice 3.4 .. PDF version: 1.4 ----------------------------------------------------------------- The root cause could also be in LibreOffice 3.4 or in whatever tool or library that is used by LibreOffice to produce PDFs. /usr/bin/pdftops belongs to the poppler-tools RPM. I re-assign it for now to the poppler-tools maintainer to have a look whether or not the root cause is in pdftops. When you print a PDF from the Adobe Reader, the Adobe Reader itself converts the PDF to PS so that the Adobe Reader sends PS to CUPS. Apparently the Adobe Reader PDF to PS conversion works best here (it is known that often the Adobe Reader works best to print PDF) to that at least for now you should use the Adobe Reader to print PDF (regardless that the Adobe Reader is non-free software). That it works with the Adobe Reader does not prove that your test.pdf is strictly PDF version 1.4 compliant. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

When I print the german website web.de, then some parts of the text are blank in the printout (they are simply not printed). If I go to Firefox->File->Print->Print to file->PDF, I get the attached z.pdf. z.pdf displays fine in Okular. If I print z.pdf from Okular, than some parts of the text are blank in the printout. If I to pdftops with z.pdf, than I get z.ps. z.ps looks fine in Okular (!). When I print z.ps from Okular, also the printout is fine. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

But this is a mayor issue. I had filed this bug after printing trouble with Okular. It was the first time after installing 12.1 that I was printing. In the meantime I've tested it, and printing is broken for almost all applications (especially LibreOffice and Firefox, and, of course, Okular). I can't print anymore because the output is terrible. As a workaround, everytime when I print, I print to a PDF file, than I open this PDF file with acroread and print it from this application. But if you print a lot, you don't like to do all these steps for printing one or two pages. Upstream there wasn't any reaction. So I reopen this bug here because with printing support a mayor feature is broken. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

(Not a special commit. They just notice that it wasn't working befor, and now after merging xpdf-3.03 it works in master. I'm not sure, but it seems that "master" is the upcoming 0.20.x release. (At least, I have installed the recent 0.18.4 from OBS and the bug is still present.) So maybe we can concider to release an update to 0.20.x once this is released? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm sorry, but this is highly unlikely: updating to a different branch of poppler likely needs a full rebuild of all apps using poppler. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
