https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=478122 Summary: WSXGA+(1680x1050) monitor is used at max 1400x1050 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: SaX2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-xorg-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: ralf.lehnert@tu-dresden.de QAContact: sax2-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Created an attachment (id=274317) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=274317) xorg.conf User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; de; rv:1.9.0.6) Gecko/2009012700 SUSE/3.0.6-0.1.2 Firefox/3.0.6 Since two days ago the following monitor combination does not work correctly: Samsung Syncmaster 2234LNX (1680x1050, WXGA+) at an Lenovo X200 (LCD: 1280x800, openSuse 11.1 x86_64, graphic card Intel GM45). SAX2: Dual-Head Modus, ext. screen defined as LCD 1680x1050 or Samsung Syncmaster 225BW. Description: Using krandrtray, the ext. monitor can be run at max in 1400x1050 resolution. The monitor display that it is synchronized correctly at 1680x1050. The picture is zoomed horizontally (1400 --> 1680). This does not look very nice. When I select the offered 1680x1050 resolution, it switches to VGA or even less. Using my SXGA (1280x1024) at home makes no problems! The error occurred after I installed GoogleEarth 4.3. This freezed my system. After reboot I deleted the GE directory (./googelearth and /googleearth) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. I do not see how to attach the SaX.log -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Looks good.
(II) intel(0): Printing DDC gathered Modelines: (II) intel(0): Modeline "1680x1050"x0.0 119.00 1680 1728 1760 1840 1050 1053 1059 1080 +hsync -vsync (64.7 kHz) [...] (II) intel(0): Output VGA using initial mode 1680x1050 (II) intel(0): Output LVDS using initial mode 1280x800
Some monitors - especially Samsung - are rather picky what concerns polarities in modelines. So what you can try are slighly differente modelines.
Preparation:
xrandr --newmode 1680x1050-- 119.00 1680 1728 1760 1840 1050 1053 1059 1080 -hsync -vsync xrandr --newmode 1680x1050-+ 119.00 1680 1728 1760 1840 1050 1053 1059 1080 -hsync +vsync xrandr --newmode 1680x1050+- 119.00 1680 1728 1760 1840 1050 1053 1059 1080 +hsync -vsync xrandr --newmode 1680x1050++ 119.00 1680 1728 1760 1840 1050 1053 1059 1080 +hsync +vsync xrandr --addmode VGA 1680x1050-- xrandr --addmode VGA 1680x1050-+ xrandr --addmode VGA 1680x1050+- xrandr --addmode VGA 1680x1050++
Testing:
xrandr --output VGA --mode 1680x1050-- xrandr --output VGA --mode 1680x1050-+ xrandr --output VGA --mode 1680x1050+- xrandr --output VGA --mode 1680x1050++
If this doesn't help either, I'm out of ideas.
Thanks. It did help after some experiments.. I had to enter: xrandr --newmode 1680x1050mm 119.00 1680 1728 1760 1840 1050 1053 1059 1080 -Hsync -Vsync The argument 1680x1050-- was not accepted (error message); also -hsync hat to be -Hsync. The monitor synchronized with ...-- and ...-+. Conclusion: Even a brand name (Samsung) does not help... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

That's weird. I can't reproduce any problems using "1680x1050--" and "-hsync" in the modeline.
The monitor synchronized with ...-- and ...-+.
So the modeline you get via DDC (+-, see comment #3) doesn't work. Great!
Conclusion: Even a brand name (Samsung) does not help...
Samsung is known for requiring monitor quirks in the Xserver. :-( -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
