[Bug 430900] New: partitioner is missing some functionality
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=430900 Summary: partitioner is missing some functionality Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Factory Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: bg@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: Documentation During the rework of our existing partitioner documentation, I found the following issues: - The "Expert" menu is not a menu anymore. Previously it contained o reread partition table (now in unused devices -> rescan) o call iscsi configuration (seems to be not available anymore) o delete partition table and disk label (maybe create partition table now) I don't know why one would move the reread partition table to a different place that is not commonly known by our customers. I would expect this functionality at a place where I look at the harddisk, but not when looking at "unused devices". If we offer to create a partition table, we probably should consider offering to change to a GPT disk label as well. However I don't dare to click on create partition table because this is not my machine. In previous versions, foreign partitions (which seem to be called "unused devices" now, which is at least strange) were mounted to /data directories. Although the mount point may be strange, the old solution made access to the "Unused Devices" way easier. For now, I just remove the relevant sections from the documentation. However, I need to know if things change here. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

- The "Expert" menu is not a menu anymore. Previously it contained o reread partition table (now in unused devices -> rescan)
Also in 'Hard Disks -> Rescan Disks'. Does the exactly the same thing 'Reread partition table' menu item did before.
o call iscsi configuration (seems to be not available anymore)
It is available, but has been moved to 'Hard Disks->Configure' menu (+ some additional items, such as call multipath or call dasd on s390 machine were added). Actually, I was thinking about moving this menu button to the top level (i.e. where all storage devices are listed), where it imho makes much more sense.
o delete partition table and disk label (maybe create partition table now)
If you choose create partition table from the menu, it will of course delete existing partition table and create it anew. But there is no explicit 'delete partition table' menu item.
If we offer to create a partition table, we probably should consider offering to change to a GPT disk label as well. However I don't dare to click on create partition table because this is not my machine.
If you dared to click on 'create partition table' ;-) you'd see that the very first dialogs lets you select between GPT and MSDOS partition table type.
In previous versions, foreign partitions (which seem to be called "unused devices" now, which is at least strange) were mounted to /data directories. Although the mount point may be strange, the old solution made access to the "Unused Devices" way easier.
Hmm .. this is something I can't decide and have to wait for Arvin to comment on. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

When where all foreign partitions mounted to /data directories? I don't think this was the case. Still, it would not make the "Unused Devices" stuff obsolete since the user can change the mount point at free will. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Unused Devices will make some people think that they can use this for random new things. Foreign Partitions are much more likeley identified as partitions that might hold useful data but are not known by this system. If I remember correctly, the latest beta had them mounted below /media with the value of LABEL as mountpoint, which is a good solution. Not my problem of course, but all this will generate some problems. The other thing you completely ignored is, that it used to be possible to run the iSCSI client configuration from the partitioner, which is not possible anymore. In fact I would have added this to the configuration possibilities of the partitioner and thus consolidate the modules. Again, I don't mind if you do anything to this, I won't reopen this therefore. However, I need to know if you do improvements to the current partitioner. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
