[Bug 483036] New: GRUB doesn't work with AHCI on AsRock K10N78FullHD-hSLI R3.0

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=483036 Summary: GRUB doesn't work with AHCI on AsRock K10N78FullHD-hSLI R3.0 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Bootloader AssignedTo: jsrain@novell.com ReportedBy: silviu_marin-caea@otpbank.ro QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.6) Gecko/2009012700 SUSE/3.0.6-0.1.2 Firefox/3.0.6 This is the board: http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=K10N78FullHD-hSLI%20R3.0&s=AM2%2b Installing 11.1 on my board went without problems as long as AHCI wasn't used. Then I have realized that it's off. I have turned it on in BIOS and then the only thing that is displayed is a "GRUB _" message with a blinking cursor. That's it. I have tried reinstalling with the AHCI mode on, and the install goes well, the SATA hdd is detected, ahci kernel module is loaded, even the reboot for Automatic configuration works. But when all is finished, at first reboot, there's the "GRUB _" thing again. This is with AHCI off: lspci -nn 00:00.0 RAM memory [0500]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] Memory Controller [10de:0754] (rev a2) 00:01.0 ISA bridge [0601]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] LPC Bridge [10de:075c] (rev a2) 00:01.1 SMBus [0c05]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] SMBus [10de:0752] (rev a1) 00:01.2 RAM memory [0500]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] Memory Controller [10de:0751] (rev a1) 00:01.3 Co-processor [0b40]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] Co-Processor [10de:0753] (rev a2) 00:01.4 RAM memory [0500]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] Memory Controller [10de:0568] (rev a1) 00:02.0 USB Controller [0c03]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] OHCI USB 1.1 Controller [10de:077b] (rev a1) 00:02.1 USB Controller [0c03]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] EHCI USB 2.0 Controller [10de:077c] (rev a1) 00:04.0 USB Controller [0c03]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] OHCI USB 1.1 Controller [10de:077d] (rev a1) 00:04.1 USB Controller [0c03]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] EHCI USB 2.0 Controller [10de:077e] (rev a1) 00:06.0 IDE interface [0101]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] IDE [10de:0759] (rev a1) 00:07.0 Audio device [0403]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] High Definition Audio [10de:0774] (rev a1) 00:08.0 PCI bridge [0604]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] PCI Bridge [10de:075a] (rev a1) 00:09.0 IDE interface [0101]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] SATA Controller (non-AHCI mode) [10de:0ad0] (rev a2) 00:0a.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] Ethernet [10de:0760] (rev a2) 00:0b.0 PCI bridge [0604]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] PCI Express Bridge [10de:0569] (rev a1) 00:10.0 PCI bridge [0604]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] PCI Express Bridge [10de:0778] (rev a1) 00:12.0 PCI bridge [0604]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] PCI Express Bridge [10de:075b] (rev a1) 00:13.0 PCI bridge [0604]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] PCI Bridge [10de:077a] (rev a1) 00:18.0 Host bridge [0600]: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] Family 10h [Opteron, Athlon64, Sempron] HyperTransport Configuration [1022:1200] 00:18.1 Host bridge [0600]: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] Family 10h [Opteron, Athlon64, Sempron] Address Map [1022:1201] 00:18.2 Host bridge [0600]: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] Family 10h [Opteron, Athlon64, Sempron] DRAM Controller [1022:1202] 00:18.3 Host bridge [0600]: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] Family 10h [Opteron, Athlon64, Sempron] Miscellaneous Control [1022:1203] 00:18.4 Host bridge [0600]: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] Family 10h [Opteron, Athlon64, Sempron] Link Control [1022:1204] 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation GeForce 8200 [10de:0849] (rev a2) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Grub is totally interface-agnostic and uses what the BIOS supplies. Complain to the board vendor, there's nothing I can do here. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The BIOS IO calls probably are messing up high sector bits. You probably want to report to the vendor. Windows wouldn't fare well either if you install it in the partition which is near to the end of the disk. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
