Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: RC 2 Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: amarjan@pobox.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.5) Gecko/2008120122 Firefox/3.0.5 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) I have the problem described in this thread, with the end result that the system locks up and needs to be hard reset: http://www.nabble.com/Unkillable-imap-process--td21260720.html This is on openSUSE 11.1 x86, with a uname -a of: Linux gondolin 2.6.27.7-9-pae #1 SMP 2008-12-04 18:10:04 +0100 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux The email thread suggests this is a FAM-related kernel bug that is fixed in 2.6.27.7-10 with this patch: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=... Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. SSH into machine 2. Tunnel IMAP, port 143 over SSH 3. Connect through tunnel with Thunderbird 4. Read mail 5. The imap process (/usr/lib/dovecot/imap) won't die after the mail client is closed. Instead, it will use 48-52% of CPU (on dual core system). Actual Results: The imap process pins one CPU and can't be killed. The reboot command (run as root) makes no progress, and can be killed with SIGINT after several minutes. After about 10-15 minutes, no new processes can be started and new logins are impossible. Then any open SSH connections stop responding to keyboard input as well. Expected Results: The imap process should shut down and the computer should not lock up. I haven't had a lockup when I used KMail on the same machine, but I always get a lockup when tunneling Thunderbird through SSH. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
