This is an intermittent problem, I can not reproduce at will. But after
discussing it in the mail list, we have pin pointed it.
Sometimes, when sending an email, my ISP responds with a 451, temporary problem
(possibly greylisting). Thunderbird acts as if the email was fully sent,
storing it in the "Sent" box, just popping up a message box saying something
like (I don't have a photo, but I might if needed) "the ISP replied there is a
temporary local problem, try later".
But there is no possibility of trying later, because the mail is not placed in
the outbox, but in the sent folder. To send it again, I copy it to the drafo
folder, edit it, hit send. Usually it fails again, several times, which leads
me to believe it is a content filter.
Now, when this happens in another machine where thunderbird hands over to
postfix for the sending, I do see the response from the ISP causing this
misbehaviour:
