[Bug 707149] New: wireless network fails during wake up from sleep, while power adapter is unplugged
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=707149 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=707149#c0 Summary: wireless network fails during wake up from sleep, while power adapter is unplugged Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: f.leerink@xs4all.nl QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:5.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/5.0 I have installed Linux 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop i686 / openSUSE 11.4 / kde 4.6 final on my Medion Akoya E1210 netbook via an external DVD-drive and the openSUSE DVD. I have powersave profiles Performance and Powersave configured in the same way: -Display brightness both on and various levels 2/3 and half -Dim display both on and varying times 5 and 4 minutes -Screen energy saving both on and varying times 10 and 7 minutes -Suspend session both on and varying times 15 and 10 minute -Button events handling both on and laptop lid closed -sleep power button pressed -prompt log out dialog -Disable desktop effects both off -Run script both off Performance profile activated if power adapter is plugged in Powersave profile activated if power adapter is unplugged In both profiles the netbook works as expected with one exception. In the case of unplugged power adapter the wireless network does not restart fully and constantly/repeatedly asked for the security password while Knetworkmanager still has the password. In the case of plugged in power adapter the wireless networks resumed oke. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Wait on suspend/sleep action or close lid for sleep while power adapter is unplugged 2.After a few minutes press power button to resume 3.Wait a short time to notice the request for security password. Actual Results: The system asked constantly/repeatedly for the security password while Knetwork-manager still has the password. Entering the security password results in a repeated request for the security password and still no active wireless network Expected Results: Restarted the wireless network resulting in an active wireless network. The same behaviour as while the power adapter is plugged in. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have installed with Yast the rfkill utility, but if I try to run as root the 'rfkill list all' command I get the following message: Can't open RFKILL control device: No such file or directory
It's Ralink, which works fine with the driver from [3]. This means the rfkill interface has not been created. This also explains why NetworkManager (NM) is not notified about the wlan adapter being switched off. Could you try and install the devel_kernel pattern [2], download the tarball [4] from [3] and try to build and install the driver. The source is GPL, but not compatible with the kernel.org, therefor it's not included in the kernel. Don't hesitate to ask if some info is missing, or you have problems to build the driver. The source is GPL, but not compatible with the kernel.org, therefor it's not included in the kernel. I am also afraid that I end up with a non standard openSUSE system, while the system is working correctly for me, since I work allways with the power cord plugged in. The problem is different as I found out. It is most probably not related to the driver, since the wireless network is working correctly as the power cord is plugged in If I start the netbook with the power cord plugged in the wireless connection works fine and I can browse the internet. As I unplug the power cord, the internet stays active. After a while the powersave functionality put the netbook to sleep. After waking up, the still unplugged netbook, wake up correctly, except the wireless network starts asking for the security password. It shows the correct password in the pop-up window but pressing enter does not result in a working wireless network. Also not after repeatedly confirming the security password in the pop-up window. If I now plug in the power cord the wireless network starts working again. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Don't worry, this is standard procedure. Ralink provides the source code in a professional way. "not compatible" means, the driver doesn't cooperate with other wifi subsystems in the kernel.org and work as an standalone monolithic driver.
This is caused by the lack of the rfkill interface in the driver included in the kernel. This shall be fixed in the driver from Ralink. I suggest, you try to build it. It's really straightforward. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
