[Bug 638719] New: kernel update removes mandatory parameters from boot commandline as entered into /boot/grub/menu.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=638719 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=638719#c0 Summary: kernel update removes mandatory parameters from boot commandline as entered into /boot/grub/menu. Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Bootloader AssignedTo: jsrain@novell.com ReportedBy: dieter.jurzitza@t-online.de QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; de; rv:1.9.2.8) Gecko/20100723 SUSE/3.6.8-0.1.1 Firefox/3.6.8 Installing openSUSE 11.3 I found that the kernel mode setting is a showstopper for my system. I added "nomodeset" "vga=1600x1200" to the boot commandline of the kernel (editing /boot/grub/menu.lst). A new kernel has been distributed via update today. After installation, both entries vanished from the menu, forcing me to reset my machine after reboot as I did not expect this to happen. The kernel installer should not touch parameters added to the boot commandline when installing new kernels. This is an unexpected and problematic behaviour I. e. when administrating machines remotely. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. add "nomodeset" to the boot commandline 2. update kernel 3. "nomodeset" is removed -> should not happen Actual Results: see above Expected Results: keep manually added parameters in the kernel command line. Nobody does this for fun, especially not with "nomodeset" -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

However, kernel updates also wipe out the title line. This makes it difficult to remember exactly what that title was for - especially when doing testing with many variations of installed sets of openSUSE, and the title line has been used to provide prompts for what is installed there. Was it the 11.3 x86_64 KDE 4.5 version that was on that partition? Or was it the 11.3 i586 LiveCD version? The only way is to try to deduce what is missing by looking at the other titles. The only way to prevent over-writing of users' settings is for the kernel update to change only those kernel parameters affected by the change. That usually involves only the kernel version number in the title line, and the kernel and initrd version numbers in the kernel and initrd lines. All the other settings should be left alone. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

There are more reasons why it is added to separate file and if you search for bootloader bugs (e.g. complete disappear of kernel options) in bugzilla, you can see reason.
