[Bug 461647] New: KDE4 updater applet doesn't " show available upgrades when backend provides them"
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=461647 Summary: KDE4 updater applet doesn't "show available upgrades when backend provides them" Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Update Problems AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: bugreports@tittel.net QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- In the KDE4 updater applet, there is an option "show available upgrades when backend provides them". With this option activated the updater should notify about available package upgrades in repositories like Packman, which don't use patches but just push new package versions to the repository. However, unlike in openSUSE 11.0, this fails to work. Of course I tried clicking on "Check Now" a couple of times, waited for a day and restarted the applet. Still: No notificiation about package upgrades from the Packman repository, even though I can see in the YaST software manager that a couple of upgrades are indeed available. The backend is set to "PackageKit Plugin", which is the only backend option anyways. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Not sure if this should be assigned to either KDE. If packagekit is not the failing part, I guess it should. If the kde updateapplet cannot show those 3rd party updates because packagekit lacks some functionality, it seems not to be a KDE issue. In the latter case bug 418277 is a duplicate. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Next time there will be upgrades in Packman for me, I will see if it works now and report back. I agree that this bug is probably related to PackageKit. Unfortunately I never tried the PackageKit backend in 11.0, since the zypp backend was the default there. So when I said "It worked in 11.0" I was referring to the 11.0 default setting (zypp plugin), not to the updater working correctly with the PackageKit plugin. If PackageKit is indeed lacking functionality to handle 3rd party updates (i.e. there is no fix that doesn't involves a big load of work), maybe an easy fix could be to gray out the "show available upgrades when backend provides them" option in the updater if the PackageKit plugin is selected. This way non-working functionality wouldn't be advertised to the user. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This way non-working functionality wouldn't be advertised to the user. PackageKit doesn't support package upgrades. That's the reason why the updater applet cannot show them. You are right, the settings dialog should gray out
