I have the bonaire firmware on TW so just (selectively) updating the firmware might resolve the issue.

Another question is if the Leap drivers can take any real advantage of the firmware given bonaire is quite recent family.

Since it lists the firmware as requirement I would assume so.

This applies to all recent Radeon cards.

Well if this firmware is really needed, and reporter is not just displeased with warnings that dracut prints out you would have to do SLE-12 maint update with those fw files added.
