Changing INITRD_MODULES as you suggested does resolve the issue. Linux boots properly from the hard disk while the BIOS setting is "enhanced IDE Mode". Thank you very much for your help (and patience) with this long running problem. Should I still test something with the installation medium? If so, how (since the initrd on disk is not used by the install DVD)?
