[Bug 271759] New: .System Backup in Yast can only perform an incremental backup - making the application of not much value
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=271759 Summary: .System Backup in Yast can only perform an incremental backup - making the application of not much value Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Usability AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: alpha096@tpg.com.au QAContact: siegfried.olschner@novell.com Significant work was done to improve system backup in YAST. The current offering is very good in functionality and well planned EXCEPT it can only ever perform an incremental backup as it searches for files "that have changes" "achieve bit" and only ever includes these files. Incremental Backups are of grate use IF and only IF you the first backup file which includes ALL files at that time. If you have over-written it OR deleted it the application becomes of no real value. The help column make the mind numbing comment If you need advanced features, such as incremental backup or network backup, you should use an expert tool. This admission, whilst inaccurate in the sense that the current system backup can ONLY create an incremental backup; is an appalling admission on behalf of Novell. The current design is most adequate, however the only issue it lacks is an ability to select backup type. Complete, Incremental, Differential. There is no other functionality it is really missing. The ability to retain file permissions needs to be expanded in the help side screen. Currently, after such significant work was done on this application for 10.2 I really had to think twice as to categorise it as Major as is most instances fails to do what it is intended to do and that is defined in its name "system backup" -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=271759 locilka@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |RESOLVED Resolution| |LATER ------- Comment #1 from locilka@novell.com 2007-05-09 02:45 MST ------- System backup has been created as a backup that should use the most of YaST features (RPM vs. Changed files, YaST Modules and their configuration Read/Export vs Import/Write). There were another tries for a YaST Data Backup tool (with incremental backup) but YaST didn't seem to be a good solution for huge amounts of files/data. YaST is obviously just a UI for another scripts when YaST Backup is (currently yet) a very big exception. Adding such features would mean need to redesign of all the insides of YaST Backup anyhow small part of UI was changed. Closing as LATER (which is better than WONTFIX) for lack of development resources. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=271759 ------- Comment #2 from alpha096@tpg.com.au 2007-05-09 11:35 MST ------- The author is in complete acceptance of new status of bug and is thankful for the explanation of what seemingly would be thought of as a simple fix. It is understood a total review of the front end would be a huge task and when consideration is made for re-design I strongly suggest we use the massive options of cpio nature commands, flexibility and performance. The current process when first initiated really means you can take the rest of the day off while it first makes its full backup (outrageously slow), thereafter a long lunch is required. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
