https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=297602 Summary: openSUSE 10.2 will not boot after expanding RAM to 4GB and whole ram is not accessed. Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.2 Status: NEW Keywords: Code Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: peterbiely@post.sk QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Other Created an attachment (id=155621) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=155621) Attached file contains info of dmesg, free and uname commands. My HW: MoBo: Gigabyte P965-DS3 rev 2.0 BIOS F9 CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 RAM: now 4GB (4x 1GiB GoodRAM 667MHz) VGA: nVidia 7600GT HDD: Seagate 250GB SATA DVD: LG H42L ATA I had 2GB RAM and openSUSE 10.2 x64 booted and worked fine. Problem occured after I bought next 2 1GiB RAM modules and put them into MoBO. First problem was that SuSE didn't boot! After few attempts I've successfully booted it with grub parameter: mem=4096M (I guessed it :-) ) but after KDE is started (second problem) I see in sysinfo:/ that I have Total memory (RAM): 3,43 GB Attached file contains displays of few (I hope) usable commands. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It looks like even though the BIOS e820 table describes the last 500 MB, the kernel isn't seeing it for whatever reason. Needing mem=4096M is certainly odd too. Andi, any idea? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

But the last 500MB is beyond 4GB so you would have needed to change to a "bigsmp" PAE kernel. The 10.3 install then saw the extended memory and installed bigsmp. As for not booting -- can't say much without a log. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
