[Bug 523335] New: Kernel Update breaks USB/Networking on Lenovo ThinkPad T60p
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=523335 User abockover@novell.com added comment http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=523335#c1 Summary: Kernel Update breaks USB/Networking on Lenovo ThinkPad T60p Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: abockover@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- I installed the latest kernel update (PAE) pushed into the 11.1 updates channel, and found that after rebooting, my USB mouse no longer worked, and most critically, networking was completely broken, at least through NetworkManager (no wired or wireless). Luckily I had an 11.1 DVD in my office, so I restored the kernel from CD manually, which fixed the regressions. Of course, for those not lucky enough to have a restore DVD, or know exactly what to do, this is a giant regression. The uname -a from the updated/broken kernel: Linux linux-2awc 2.6.27.23-0.1-pae #1 SMP 2009-05-26 17:02:05 -0400 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Jul 18 19:15:34 linux-2awc kernel: Unable to load NLS charset utf8 is an indicator of this. This could mean: - kernel-pae-base was updated, but not kernel-pae-base - depmod did not run correctly This might mean that depmod -a might not have run correctly during update. Can you attach the packagemanager logs? /var/log/YaST2/ for yast2, /var/log/pk_backend_zypp for PackageKit (when using the desktop applet). -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Scott, how does packagekit react on things that break in the middle of the update, like unavailable downloads? does it try continuing or does it abort? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If libzypp encounters an error it can not handle it reports this error and PK will bubble that error back up to the users. Second question of what happened here - I may be wrong but my best Sherlock Holmes attempt at reading these log files indicates YaST did the partial install. 2009-07-18 17:59:40 - PK reports kernel update + other updates. 2009-07-18 18:08:11 - PK determines to install 4 kernel packages 2009-07-18 18:08:22 - PK finds conflicts during dependency resolution prior to install on package osc. Reports error 2009-07-18 18:08:40 - PK exits 2009-07-18 18:08:44 - YaST is launched presumably to resolve dependency conflicts 2009-07-18 18:09:08 - YaST determines to install 4 kernel packages 2009-07-18 18:11:51 - YaST successfully installs kernel-pae-base 2009-07-18 18:49:59 - YaST install aborted During the time YaST is running PK is not. PK tries a couple times presumably to do some background checking but is locked out because YaST owns the libzypp lock (2009-07-18 18:14:06) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
