[Bug 276869] New: SATA disks unreadable at first-boot
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=276869 Summary: SATA disks unreadable at first-boot Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: asnd@triumf.ca QAContact: qa@suse.de Installing openSUSE 10.2 on on a new computer (Intel 945 MB, Pentium D processor, Seagate SATA disks) the early installation proceeds normally, including package selection and writing to disk, But the "first boot" for configuration hangs up with the hard disks not responding. I flashed the bios with the latest from Intel, tried "legacy ide" settings in the bios, various kernel parameters like irqpoll and acpi=off, tried with only one hard-disk connected, all with no success. This report focusses on the normal mode of "AHCI" set in the bios. Booting a different live/recovery system (new gmrl 1.0) shows the disks are readable and have the openSUSE system on them. After detecting usb, the errors begin with messages like (scribbled and retyped here): ata1.00 exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0xff SErr 0x0 action 0x2 frozen ata1.00 cmd 60/08:00:3f:a9:13/00:00:00:04:00:00/40 tag 0 cdb 0x0 data 4096 in res 40/00:00:00... Emask 0x4 (timeout) .. more similar lines ... ata1: soft resetting port ata1: soft reset failed (1st FIS failed) ata1: soft reset failed, retrying in 5 secs ata1: hard resetting port ata1: port is slow to respond, please be patient ata1: COMRESET failed (device not ready) Followed by a long scroll of errors like: sd 0:0:0:0: SCSI error, return code = 0x00040000 end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector xxxxxx I will attach files for dmesg, hwinfo, and lspci, obtained during the initial package installation phase, when it was working. (The later configuration phase of installation is impossible.) I just successfully did the installation by network, so updated packages were installed from the start. Presumably it is the updated kernel that now handles the disks. Perhaps this report will help someone else trying to install from DVD though. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
