[Bug 750325] New: Wireless interface with ifup fails with apostrophe in ESSID
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=750325 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=750325#c0 Summary: Wireless interface with ifup fails with apostrophe in ESSID Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: dfreeman@ieee.org QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:10.0.2) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/10.0.2 I have been experiencing this bug for as long as I've had wireless - probably openSUSE 10.x. I've only just now figured out what's going on AND how to work around it. My wireless LAN has an ESSID resembling "JOE'S GARAGE". The quotes are not part of it, but the apostrophe is. It's not under my control, so I can't change the ESSID. I am using WPA-PSK with a passphrase. This has never worked with the network configured using ifup, which sucks for setting up a server, but it works okay with network manager on my laptop so I've simply put up with it. Now I have a fix. In /etc/sysconfig/ifcfg-wlan0 (or equivalent): WIRELESS_ESSID='JOES GARAGE' Note that the apostrophe has been stripped from the ESSID, so it won't be found. Opening the configuration tool again in YaST2 will show a blank ESSID. In the past I've tried putting regular quotes in place of the single quotes, and I've tried escaping the apostrophe with a backslash, but neither worked. Now, finally, there is a viable workaround in 12.1. Putting regular quotes around the ESSID yields a perfectly working configuration: WIRELESS_ESSID="JOE'S GARAGE" Whereas simply escaping it with any number of backslashes doesn't work. At least I'm happy, I have a workaround. (So long as I don't use the graphical tool, or I have to fix this each time.) And hopefully others will find this entry and their nightmare will be over. Since it's probably a very simple fix in some config scripts, I hope this can be fixed as an update to 12.1. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Configure wireless AP with ESSID containing an apostrophe 2. Encryption should be WPA-PSK with a passphrase 3. Try to connect using YaST2 and traditional ifup Actual Results: Network is not up. YaST2 lists the ESSID as blank if another attempt is made. Expected Results: Network should connect. YaST2 should remember the ESSID. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
