[Bug 592399] New: openSUSE-11.3 milestone4 Intel 5300AGN Wireless connect is intermittent
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=592399 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=592399#c0 Summary: openSUSE-11.3 milestone4 Intel 5300AGN Wireless connect is intermittent Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Milestone 4 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: lee_matheson@hotmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=351505) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=351505) dmesg from liveCD session User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.8) Gecko/20100204 SUSE/3.5.8-0.1.1 Firefox/3.5.8 64-bit KDE OpenSUSE-11.3 (KDE4 liveCD) milestone-4 wireless for an Intel Corporation Ultimate N WiFi Link 5300 AGN is intermittent with significant drop outs, often requiring manual intervention to restart connection. This works significantly better on 64-bit openSUSE-11.1 and 11.2 on same laptop, although drop outs still seen there (but less). WinXP on same laptop has no drop outs. Router in use has solid connections with other PCs via wireless. Initially I tried connecting via network manager which failed. I then went to YaST > Network devices and connected via the traditional method. Was able to access Internet via firefox for a short time. However shortly there after connection dropped. Will attach dmesg via attachment. Signal is strong as less than 6 meters from wireless router. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Just connect with wireless and drops always occur 2. 3. Actual Results: Always get drop outs after wireless connection. Expected Results: Expect continuous connection with no drop outs. 64-bit KDE OpenSUSE-11.3 (KDE4 liveCD) milestone-4 wireless for an Intel Corporation Ultimate N WiFi Link 5300 AGN is intermittent with significant drop outs, often requiring manual intervention to restart connection. It probably doesn't matter here, but that info is really useful. You promised dmesg output. I thought the "04:00.0" and the "1121" from running "lspci -vv" would be sufficient to identify the specific Intel WiFi 5300 (as there is more than one). Next time I'll run "lspci -nn" which is what I think you mean ? that gives: 04:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 5300 AGN [Shiloh] Network Connection [8086:4235] -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=592399 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=592399#c5 --- Comment #5 from Larry Finger <Larry.Finger@lwfinger.net> 2010-03-30 23:30:49 UTC --- This problem is known to the Intel developers and is caused by the watchdog timer kicking in for some as yet unknown reason. A set of 3 patches posted in Kernel Bugzilla (https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15374) has a partial fix. The watchdog timer kicks in, but the event is a lot less disruptive. These patches should be applied to the 2.6.33 source. They are in 2.6.34, thus the problem will disappear from 11.3 MX as soon as the kernel changes. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I note that build 0553 has the 2.6.34-rc3-2-desktop 64-bit kernel. Wireless is thus far working better with this openSUSE build. I note this in dmesg run with this build and wireless connected: [ 2005.577945] iwlagn 0000:04:00.0: iwl_tx_agg_start on ra = 00:1f:3f:16:37:fb tid = 0 [ 2016.785419] iwlagn 0000:04:00.0: Microcode SW error detected. http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=592399 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=592399#c7 --- Comment #7 from Lee Matheson <lee_matheson@hotmail.com> 2010-04-12 05:34:02 UTC --- A final contribution, with 11.3 build0553 64-bit KDE liveCD, I left my laptop running with the wireless connection for 16 hours continuous and the Internet/wireless stayed connected all the time, albeit there were many of the above described disconnects followed by reconnected. But they were too fast to be noticeable and could only be seen by looking at dmesg. With the above patch my view is with the 2.6.34 kernel the Intel 5300AGN behaves much better than it ever did with the earlier kernels in 11.1 and 11.2. Assuming this build 0553 is representative of what we will see in 11.3 and that there is no regression in behaviour between build-0553 and 11.3 GM, I'm happy for this bug report to be closed. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I connected the wireless to our lan. There was no firmware entry in the /var/log/messages for the 5300AGN firmware, but there was in dmesg, ... which had this two similar lines to what you posted: [ 40.594754] iwlagn 0000:04:00.0: firmware: requesting iwlwifi-5000-2.ucode .... [ 41.703880] iwlagn 0000:04:00.0: loaded firmware version 8.24.2.12 .... My technique for connecting to our home WLAN with the liveCD after boot is to: (1) close kwallet (2) try to connect wireless to the WLAN with knetwork manager (ensuring I select autoconnect) where knetworkmanager always fails to connect. (3) kill knetworkmanager from konsole (4) start knetworkmanager from konsole, and always wireless connects. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
