[Bug 280046] New: kvpnc does not run with enough permissions to load module 'tun'
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=280046 Summary: kvpnc does not run with enough permissions to load module 'tun' Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jrobiso2@ford.com QAContact: qa@suse.de kvpnc errors out with "cannot load module tun". If I run vpnc manually as root, everything is fine. If I run Kvpnc as root, its fine. But as a regular use, even if user_control over the network is enabled, kvpnc cannot load the needed stuff to connect properly. Also, syslog shows "/usr/sbin/pptp called with wrong arguments, program not started." -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

If not, load it manually as root: modprobe tun If you don't want to do this everytime you reboot, add it to a list of modules to be loaded on boot: 0) execute: yast2 sysconfig 1) go to System -> Kernel -> MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT and add there the tun module. 2) Finish Please report if it works for you. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

It works that way, certainly. Now, the question really should be, is THAT going to be our answer? Tell new Linux users to modify /etc/sysconfig files, su to root, etc. etc.? If the user has network controls, he should also have vpn control too. We should be defaulting to usercontrol (I think we are already) but that must include ensuring the networking apps work for regular users too. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=280046 ------- Comment #5 from jrobiso2@ford.com 2007-06-06 08:56 MST ------- I hope I didn't sound snotty earlier, but I think it's important for us to consider our audience. Folks who use OpenSUSE for a server generally can be expected to know, or learn, what they are doing and if needed, shut off user_control and things like that. The Desktop side of the OpenSuSE audience cannot be expected to do that. Thus, our default settings should target the desktop, and we let the server folks change it. So interfaces to things like vpnc (i.e. Kvpnc, NetworkManager, etc.) should all be usable by desktop folks out of the box. Matej, you've asked openswan and vpnc maintainers this question, but what about the Kvpnc guys? I have to assume that it's a different group (maybe I'm wrong?). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Marius, is it possible to add tun module to sysconfig on openswan installation?
No, wrong place / openswan itself never needs the tun module. The kvpnc maintainers have to fix kvpnc => reassigned to them. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
