[Bug 326653] New: Need to create a system type restor functionality - similar to Wijndows XP
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=326653 Summary: Need to create a system type restor functionality - similar to Wijndows XP Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i386 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.2 Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: scocoo@tpg.com.au QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: Customer Whilst I hate comparing OS and hate using some of their ideas this one is of merit and functionality I would believe easily possible. Because we already have log rotate and housekeeping function already as part of Suse Linux I feel we should be able to create a type of system restore function to the state of the PC unit at a particular point in time, however I feel we can do this much better. The limitation of XP's system restore is that is can only restore the configuration to a previous time, it cannot recover files that are deleted or once held in the users home directory. I think we can do much better. We could time initiate a copy of the users /home directory configuration files, zip them up and hold. Beyond my knowledge is what changes also need to be recorded from the / root or system directories. So as not to get in the way of any incremental achieve type backup the usage of that achieve bit is not a god idea, and NOT appropriate as we need to capture the total configuration of each users config files. It would need to be a cron job executed by a 'allusers' type credentials, however its storage area should be with the /root directories for security reasons. The 'allusers" function would need the ability to copy and zip the users config files and then be able to write them back WITHOUT changing the files attributes or permissions. There may be an issue with copying user credentials and passwords and restoring them. - Thats the hard part really. The setup of this function would need to also performs other duties. 1. Wake the PC if hibernating. 2. Work as another cron job, however whilst running the if the user attempts to use the PC we need a System frozen screen, similar to the screen a so designated file server presents when a system shutdown is requested and we could add a fuel gauge as to progress and hence display the time when the PC will be finished capturing the config files and offer "Abort System Bookmark" with root password. 3. Consideration could be given to permitting the user to indicate a time period when system is NOT in use that do not conflict with system backup time periods. 4. Access to NFS,Samba, print file activity need to be halted at this point in time and for security reasons all IP traffic should be halted during this process. 5. Empty RAM cache, copy config files to created RAM drive as big as possible and the zip and finally physically copy to HDD may prove the fastest way and you could devote almost max CPU resources. It is NOT conceivable to include anything other the /home . system config fies and other required files in the /root system directories. Others additional feedback welcome from either QA or other users who care about this enhancement request The system restore calendar and available space functionality I will leave with you. QA.
