[Bug 350993] New: Unable to get a functional bootsplash with either splashy or bootsplash on PPC .
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=350993 User hammett@orcon.net.nz added comment https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=350993#c1 Summary: Unable to get a functional bootsplash with either splashy or bootsplash on PPC. Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: PowerPC OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: hammett@orcon.net.nz QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Component Test A fresh installation of opensuse 10.3 PPC does not show a bootsplash on an imac b/w g3. Our testers have tried many methods to get the bootsplash functional, but as yet, no luck. We can't find anything wrong in the boot logs, and as far as we can tell bootsplash is being run, just no splash. We have tested uninstalling bootsplash and trying splashy, but splashy isnt even being started. Our splashy tests show that it is working, but won't fire up at boot. We have xubuntu 7.10 on another machine, and using usplash, has a functional bootsplash. I have attached as much info as possible to see if anyone can help. These are clients new to the world of Linux who are switching all their old g3's to opensuse and SLED at a later date. Regards Buttons: --boot ##Y2support-/tmp/siga/siga.txt: 1. I don't know why it was excluded from the kernel. Anyway, splashy is a user space program, so that should work and, given the platform, I guess that you should be better off with that. It seems like you should create an initrd which includes splashy: there's /lib/mkinitrd/scripts/setup-splashy.sh. Did you create one? Must say that I've never used it, so I can't offer any advice on how to set it up. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The bootsplash patch on the bootsplash website is for kernel 2.6.15.x, and when I have tried to apply it, it ruins the kernel sources so I cannot compile until I remove the kernel sources and reinstall them. Splashy is not working and as far as we can tell it is not being called at all. We tested it on two-G3s, a G4 and G5 with no luck. We add splash splash=silent vga= video= and still splashy is not being called. We looked at the boot.msg and we confirmed that splashy is not actually being called at startup in the initrd. We can test splashy with splashy boot splashy test and all is fine. We even edited the /etc/init.d/boot and added /bin/splashy boot after /proc was started, which worked, but just brings up the boot screen with no progress bar. SO there is nothing wrong with the video settings, and everything to do with how splashy is being setup on a PPC. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have emailed the maintainer of the setup-splashy.sh script (hmacht@suse.de) in hopes they may shed some light on the problem. This is what we have found thus far. 1. The splashy script /lib/mkinitrd/scripts/setup-splashy.sh looks for the file /usr/sbin/resume & the directory /etc/splashy. If it doesn't find both it doesn't make the directory /etc/splashy and populate it, or copy the lib files to /usr/lib/ and lib/ in mkinitrd. if [ -d /etc/splashy ] && [ -f /usr/sbin/resume ]; then # find the current theme DUMMY=$(cat /etc/splashy/config.xml) THEME=$(echo $DUMMY | perl -p -e 's/<!--.*?--
//g;s/^.*<current_theme>//;s/</current_theme>.*$//;') if [ -z $THEME -o ! -d /etc/splashy/themes/$THEME ]; then echo "$0: warning, splashy theme not found in config file, using 'openSUSE'" THEME=openSUSE fi
I changed the above to if [ -d /etc/splashy ] && [ -f /usr/sbin/pm-suspend ]; then # find the current theme DUMMY=$(cat /etc/splashy/config.xml) THEME=$(echo $DUMMY | perl -p -e 's/<!--.*?--
//g;s/^.*<current_theme>//;s/</current_theme>.*$//;') if [ -z $THEME -o ! -d /etc/splashy/themes/$THEME ]; then echo "$0: warning, splashy theme not found in config file, using 'openSUSE'" THEME=openSUSE fi
This makes, and populates the /etc/splashy /libs /usr/libs folders with all the necessary splashy files in them, in initrd, but a new problem arises: When mkinitrd is run and the init script inside initrd is dynamically linked to the splashy binaries in /usr/sbin there is an error, apparently SuSE 10.3 loads a heck of a lot of 64-bit libraries and binaries. The ld command tries to link/run/? (I am a little fuzzy on this point?) some 64-bit libs and fails with error output. mkinitrd continues and then exits. God I hope i have made myself clear, if you need any more detailed information please get a hold of me. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If you unpack initrd, as you suggested none of the files/directores listed in the setup-splashy.sh script are included into initrd, that is because of the first line in the setup-splashy.sh script (which can be found in /lib/mkinitrd/scripts/: if [ -d /etc/splashy ] && [ -f /usr/sbin/resume ]; then Essentially its says that both the splashy directory AND the file resume MUST be there in order for the setup-splashy.sh script to continue. I believe this is because in SuSE 10.3, that the initrd is dynamically linked to the splashy binaries in /usr/sbin/ through the files /usr/$LIBDIR/libsplashy.so.1 /usr/$LIBDIR/libsplashycnf.so.1, rather than the binaries being placed in the initrd, since there is no section within the setup-splashy.sh script (below) that does this (point me out if I am wrong). imacg3:/boot # cat /lib/mkinitrd/scripts/setup-splashy.sh #!/bin/bash # # Copyright (C) 2007 SUSE Linux Products GmbH # # Author: Holger Macht <hmacht@suse.de> # # This file is released under the GPLv2. # #%stage: setup # # never even 'return' from a mkinitrd script, which would result in an # aborted initrd build process if [ -d /etc/splashy ]; then # find the current theme DUMMY=$(cat /etc/splashy/config.xml) THEME=$(echo $DUMMY | perl -p -e 's/<!--.*?-->//g;s/^.*<current_theme>//;s/</current_theme>.*$//;') if [ -z $THEME -o ! -d /etc/splashy/themes/$THEME ]; then echo "$0: warning, splashy theme not found in config file, using 'openSUSE'" THEME=openSUSE fi LIBDIR=lib if [ "`LANG=C LC_ALL=C file -b /usr/sbin/resume | awk '/^ELF ..-bit/ { print $2 }'`" = "64-bit" ]; then LIBDIR=lib64 fi LIBS="\ /usr/$LIBDIR/libdirect-1.0.so.0 \ /usr/$LIBDIR/libdirectfb-1.0.so.0 \ /usr/$LIBDIR/libfusion-1.0.so.0 \ /usr/$LIBDIR/libpng12.so.0 \ /usr/$LIBDIR/libglib-2.0.so.0 \ /usr/$LIBDIR/libsplashy.so.1 \ /usr/$LIBDIR/libsplashycnf.so.1 \ /$LIBDIR/libsysfs.so.2 \ /$LIBDIR/libm.so.6 \ /$LIBDIR/libz.so.1" SPLASHY_FILES=" /etc/splashy/config.xml \ /etc/splashy/themes/$THEME/*" for I in `directfb-config --libs --input=keyboard --imageprovider=jpeg,gif,png --font=ft2,default`; do F=`dirname -- $I`/`basename -- $I .o`.so if [ -f $F ]; then if [ ! -d $tmp_mnt/`dirname $F` ]; then mkdir -p $tmp_mnt/`dirname $F` fi cp -dp $F $tmp_mnt/$F fi done for I in $LIBS; do [ ! -d $tmp_mnt/`dirname $I` ] && mkdir -p $tmp_mnt/`dirname $I` cp -L $I $tmp_mnt/$I done for I in $SPLASHY_FILES; do [ ! -d $tmp_mnt/`dirname $I` ] && mkdir -p $tmp_mnt/`dirname $I` cp $I $tmp_mnt/$I done fi # never exit with nonzero, so we never cause mkinitrd to abort # - not having splash during resume is ugly, not booting is evil. # do not exit here - this script is sourced! true To be sure though, I altered a section of the script above to that below, and ran mkinitrd again: SPLASHY_FILES=" /usr/sbin/splashy* \ /etc/splashy/config.xml \ /etc/splashy/themes/$THEME/*" This placed the splashy binaries from /usr/sbin/ into initrd, but did not work. There have not been any efforts yet to make it work for usual boot. The script checks for the resume binary and moves the splashy dependencies only to the initrd if it is found because working userpace suspend/resume tools are needed. The setup-splashy.sh script hardcodes some of the needed libraries for splashy in current versions. This is optimized for i386 and x86_64 only. This is ugly, yes, but there is no other way because libdirectfb pulls some libraries at runtime which cannot be figured out with ldd. Hope this clarifies a bit. Maybe we'll use splashy for future openSUSE versions, but that's not decided yet. I'm adding Michael Schroeder to CC, because he might know why bootsplash is not enabled in PPC. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Any other options? Yes, I understand that it is not a trivial task to adjust the openSUSE booting to use splashy. Jeff: Who was responsible for the powerpc kernel?
