After setting the proxy in Yast and re-logging in the weather for example is not displayed automatically in the clock applet because of this problem. As soon as proxy is set from gnome-control-centre the weather display works as expected. It is inconvenient for a user to have to set proxy at different places eg: Yast, gnome-control-centre, KDE personal settings. Would guess this might affect getting updates.

The proxy plugin wasn't being enabled at all in gnome-settings-daemon's configuration. Long answer - You may be able to run gnome-settings-daemon once (or just login to a GNOME session once), and then run Evolution afterwards, even without gnome-settings-daemon running. What g-s-d does is: 1. it reads the proxy settings from /etc/sysconfig/proxy; 2. it writes those settings to your GConf data. Later, applications pick up this data from GConf. Summary: login to a GNOME session once, and then go back to your KDE session, and then run Evolution.
