If I klick on "Open in external browser", then I get a message box showing that the service "kfmclient" is not available. The browser was firefox. Can't reproduce this with a clean beta2 user running Akregator under XFCE. Did you set the Akregator browser preference (it doesn't use the KDE wide one, supposedly because it has many non KDE users like yourself)? Then it opens with firefox fine. If you set the text/html association to firefox (kcmshell filetypes) you can go so far as to open links from Konqueror in Firefox, even.
It seems to be fixed with Beta 2. Or: Could it be related to bug 300678? I use the default setting in Akregator which is to use the default KDE browser.
