Sax2 can be successfully run after loging in as "root" in level 3 in terminal mode. Strangely, Sax2 shows 3d acceleration to be active although no option to install 9.6xx NVIDA drive in software management is possible. I simply installed openSUSE 11.1 RC1 from the DVD into a formatted partition. The log files attached were created on installation. The DVD installation routine automatically configured for an NVIDIA driver although there was no package for the NVIDIA driver on the DVD or in the online main OS and non-OS repositories. Please try to re-create the configuration file with 'sax2 -a -r'.

Did this card work for you before under X using the NV driver? If this is a regression to an earlier driver version it might be possible to spot. I need to see if I can find a NVIDIA GeForce2 MX where I can reproduce this problem. Until then a screenshot would be helpful. Are those bars static or are they flickering? If the text console comes back it means the Xserver has crashed. The display manager doesn't terminate it itself. I don't see any indication of a crash in comment #21. It must be something else with kdm. Sorry Stefan, I give this one back to Egbert. Btw. its my machine with a Geforce 6600 where we found that the nv driver does not work.
