[Bug 282667] New: Sensors from 'ITE IT8716F Super I/O chip cannot' be read (MB = ASUS M2N-E)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=282667 Summary: Sensors from 'ITE IT8716F Super I/O chip cannot' be read (MB = ASUS M2N-E) Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: ingo.steiner@gmx.net QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: ingo.steiner@gmx.net I am unable to read/display sensor values from my ASUS N2N-E motherboard. CPU = AMD 64 4200+X2, Chipset = nForce 570-Ultra. sensors version 2.10.1 with libsensors version 2.10.1 have run sensors-detect, output is: ---- snip ---- Some Super I/O chips may also contain sensors. We have to write to standard I/O ports to probe them. This is usually safe. Do you want to scan for Super I/O sensors? (YES/no): Probing for Super-I/O at 0x2e/0x2f Trying family `ITE'... Output of lsmod is like this: Module Size Used by i2c_dev 12932 0 it87 24228 0 hwmon_vid 6784 1 it87 hwmon 7428 1 it87 i2c_isa 9344 1 it87 -------snip------- i2c_nforce2 11136 0 -------snip------- However checking the sensors fails: pp:/etc/init.d # sensors No sensors found! Make sure you loaded all the kernel drivers you need. Try sensors-detect to find out which these are. or trying this: pp:/etc/init.d # sensors -c /etc/sensors.conf it8716-* Specified sensor(s) not found! At every boot I get the message about failing with loading lm_sensors. It is activated in the Runlevel-Editor, but never loaded automatically at boot. I definitely got all setup correctly (works fine under 64-bit Ubuntu feisty with kernel 2.6.20) If any additional info is needed, please advise, Ingo -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

support for the ITE IT8716F was added in kernel 2.6.19
That is correct, but there is a backport/patch also for 2.6.18 available here: http://jdelvare.pck.nerim.net/sensors/hwmon-it8716f-it8718f-v4-2.6.18.patch Unfortunately I am not (yet) skilled enough to upgrade the kernel and Yast doesn't offer a later kernel. As the current kernel also contains other backports, I do not understand why above patch is not made available during online-update? At the same time I want to point out that lm_sensors version in both Ubuntu and openSUSE is exactly the same: 2.10.1 and it was installed with Yast without any tricks.
