[Bug 729228] New: System boot fails after kernel upgrade, display goes black and OS never starts
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=729228 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=729228#c0 Summary: System boot fails after kernel upgrade, display goes black and OS never starts Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: devmail@hispeed.ch QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_6_8) AppleWebKit/534.51.22 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1.1 Safari/534.51.22 After upgrading to kernel-desktop-2.6.37.6-0.9.1.x86_64, the system no longer boots normally. My system has an AMD 790GX chipset, and I use the on-board graphics. It used to work flawlessly before the kernel update. Workaround: Use the "nomodeset" boot option. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Power on computer 2. Select the desktop kernel in GRUB (not Failsafe) Actual Results: For a short moment the splash screen, with the logo and progress bar, appears, then the display goes black and nothing more happens. It is not possible to log in remotely to the machine. Doing a hard reset and rebooting using "nomodeset linux 1" shows that no log files were written /var/log by the failed boot. Expected Results: Normal system boot, leading to the X login screen. FGLRX not installed. Motherboard: Asus M4A78-E, AMD 790GX chipset (HD 3300 graphics, ChipId = 0x9614), DVI output used, 1600x1200 resolution. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This applies to all screen savers, even the one which just blanks the screen - no OpenGL rendering needed. Workaround: Disable password request for the screen saver. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It now appears to me that any type of popup (e.g., taskbar tooltips, Amarok notifications, and the screen saver password dialog) can trigger an X server crash. To me they appear to occur randomly. I don't know where to look for log entries that can explain the behaviour. Workaround: Disabling desktop effects appears to restore X server stability. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Since working around it with the nomodeset option works, I'm assigning to our KMS expert. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=729228 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=729228#c4 --- Comment #4 from Egbert Eich <eich@suse.com> 2012-03-27 06:31:04 UTC --- The Xserver crash is a different problem than the one reported originally. Please open a separate ticket. This issue has been reported for 11.4. Does it still happen with 12.1? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Reports against openSUSE 11.4 and prior will not get the attention needed to resolve them before openSUSE 12.2 is release and openSUSE 11.4 becomes unmaintained. Please re-test with openSUSE 12.1 or openSUSE RC2+ and re-open with an updated Product if you still encounter your issue. We apologize for this issue not getting the attention it deserves but we are focusing our resources in the area where they will have the most impact for our users. We're working hard to make openSUSE 12.2 the best openSUSE release yet! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
