[Bug 267051] New: Install failure on Dell Inspiron 1501
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=267051 Summary: Install failure on Dell Inspiron 1501 Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 3 Platform: 64bit OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: noble@patriot.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Install hangs for a long time on a Dell Inspiron 1501 during initial driver loading. Specifically at this point: Dell SATA controller drivers: ahci loading ahci Eventually, install proceeds up to Hardware Probing. At that point I receive the Error message "No hard disks were found for the installation." The system remains functional after the error, and I can exit using the Abort option. Dead end? No, not quite. Through trial and many errors, I found that the problem is solved if I add the following command to the list of startup options: mouse_proto=bare irqpoll Why this eliminates the hang and enables the hard disk discovery is a puzzle to me. My first guess was that it was due to the fact that the Inspiron 1501 has no PS/2 port, only USB ports, and I use a USB mouse. However, after the hang is overcome, the mouse works as it should on the GUI, and continues to do so even after the Error. Furthermore, the error sequence is the same if I unplug the mouse and use the touchpad. So, I conclude that the "mouse_proto" cure really has little or nothing to do with the mouse. This is not a fresh problem with Alpha 3. The same issues exist with SuSE 10.2 and SuSE 10.3 Alpha 1 on this hardware, and the cure is the same. You probably have the specs on the Dell Inspiron 1501. If not, contact me and I'll provide details on any component(s) I can identify. This laptop uses the AMD Turion 64 x2 TL-56 processor and I installed the 64-bit version of Alpha 3. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

That will give us a lot of the information we'll need including hardware description, kernel boot log, etc. It looks like you're running into an interrupt routing problem, but the log will tell us more. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Dell has, at least partially, solved the reported problem with a BIOS update.
On April 2, Dell released BIOS version A09 for the Inspiron 1501. Today was the first opportunity I've had to again try installation of 10.3 Alpha 3 in order to get you your requested hwinfo file.
To my surprise, the installation proceeded uneventfully with the A09 BIOS in place. No extended delay when loading drivers, and no error message at Hardware Probing.
The new BIOS also solved the problem with version 10.2.
So, at this moment I am unable to replicate the error.
I suppose you can close the report. New Inspiron 1501s will ship with the new BIOS, and Linux users are likely to keep their PCs updated, thus the problem will evaporate.
