[Bug 620384] New: nouveau kms/initrd trouble after udev up/downgrade and/or mkinitrd
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=620384 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=620384#c0 Summary: nouveau kms/initrd trouble after udev up/downgrade and/or mkinitrd Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: koenig@linux.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- WARNING: very weird problem ahead:-(( Lenovo T61P with Nvidia Quadro FX 570M. because of bug #619461 I tried to update to newer udev stuff from Base:System. reboot with new udev still worked (but did not fix that udev problems), X11 in runlevel 5 with nouveau KMS in default kernel came up as before. so I run "mkinitrd" hoping this would fix bug #619461, but at next reboot after ~4.5 seconds when starting udev und nouveau screen when first nuts and then black -- and system locked up (no network connection at that time:( after testing bug #619461 (still broken even after mkinitrd) I downgraded all those udev packages back to factory version and again created new initrd... BUT my nouveau problems stay the same, so here more details about the current behaviour: after ~4.5 seconds (some udev and nouveau msgs) there is first some red/brown thick horizontal bar/distortion at the top 1/3 of the screen, then a smaller black bar with some few color pixels -- and then the screen goes black. if I'm not too impatiend, console comes back after loooong time (60+ seconds) and frame buffer console works (only runlevel 3, Xserver will hang). the first msgs in boot.msg with desktop kernel are: klogd 1.4.1, log source = ksyslog started. 00000010 - Ch 1 <6>[ 48.186771] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: PFIFO_INTR 0x00000010 - Ch 1 <6>[ 48.186771] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: PFIFO_INTR 0x00000010 - Ch 1 <6>[ 48.186771] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: PFIFO_INTR 0x00000010 - Ch 1 <6>[ 48.186771] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: PFIFO_INTR 0x00000010 - Ch 1 [ ... 1400 lines removed !! ] <6>[ 60.402144] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: PFIFO_INTR 0x00000010 - Ch 1 <6>[ 60.402174] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: PFIFO_INTR 0x00000010 - Ch 1 <6>[ 60.402408] input: PS/2 Generic Mouse as /devices/platform/i8042/serio1/serio2/input/i nput5 <6>[ 60.418339] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: PFIFO_INTR 0x00000010 - Ch 1 <6>[ 60.418914] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: PFIFO_INTR 0x00000010 - Ch 1 [ ... another ~2900 lines removed ... ] <6>[ 75.242400] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: PFIFO_INTR 0x00000010 - Ch 1 <6>[ 75.242400] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: PFIFO still angry after 101 spins, halt <4>[ 76.503052] Console: switching to colour dummy device 80x25 <4>[ 76.532506] Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 236x71 <6>[ 76.563220] fb0: nouveaufb frame buffer device <6>[ 76.563334] registered panic notifier with default kernel that "timeout" is much worse - from the start of boot.msg: klogd 1.4.1, log source = ksyslog started. 0000:01:00.0: PFIFO_INTR 0x00000010 - Ch 1 <6>[ 256.237820] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: PFIFO_INTR 0x00000010 - Ch 1 <6>[ 256.237850] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: PFIFO_INTR 0x00000010 - Ch 1 [ .. ~3300 lines removed ] <6>[ 287.019502] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: PFIFO_INTR 0x00000010 - Ch 1 <6>[ 287.019533] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: PFIFO_INTR 0x00000010 - Ch 1 <6>[ 287.019545] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: PFIFO still angry after 101 spins, halt <4>[ 287.905728] Console: switching to colour dummy device 80x25 <4>[ 287.934540] Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 236x71 <6>[ 287.961403] fb0: nouveaufb frame buffer device .. right now I have to boot with "nomodeset" to get around those problems. I'm not really sure if that udev update/downgrade messed up something in the system which is now persistent and which got copied into the new initrd (of course I do not have backups of old/working initrd :-(( or if this is some "mkinitrd-only" thing and that udev stuff isn't involved at all. any idea what I should look for to get more information ? e.g. I checked time stamps in /etc/udev/... for new (persistent) files but the only one is /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

this is not a Xserver/Xorg problem but firstly a kernel-only thing if I don't miss something. the aim of this ticket (for me) would be to fix kernel module that this state never will show up again: [ 75.242400] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: PFIFO_INTR 0x00000010 - Ch 1 [ 75.242400] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: PFIFO still angry after 101 spins, halt if this won't happen again, Xorg/dri might be fine ?! anyway, in bug #619910 I attached a Xorg.0.log (id=373806) after the same kernel msgs: http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=373806 -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I please you again. nouveau_dri.so (>= nv40) and nouveau_vieux_dri.so (< nv40) causes often messages in dmesg ... Or on my ION system and some other nv50 systems even a XOrg/Kernel crash after some time. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
