I also get "Storing folder" type messages slowly increasing in the status bar, which appear to block stuff - though I've not touched the folder in any way - just viewed it [ no deletions/moves etc. ]. Ideally switching should be faster now, because, we would save only the modified data on switch that before, where we use to save all from mem to disk. Typically the storing of mbox data will be a lot/huge specially on expunge or mbox-rewrite, even then, there are different handles to sqlite to read/write, so viewing the new folder shouldn't be blocked from Oct'6 th version. If you are facing it again, lemme know. And the fsync stupidity is of sqlite and not of ext3 I guess. When we commit in a transaction to avoid disk seeks, excellent sqlite creates a folders.db-journal file and writes to it and fsync's every command to the journal file. Mozilla/Firefox works around this by writing a vfs layer around to keep fsyncing on every call and at particular intervals it fsyncs on a separate thread, making sqlite a non-io-blocking. meaning that every call to db, doesn't block on fsync for firefox. I'm working on a similar vfs model for us too, but not sure, when I can find time to complete it. The solution is btrfs or ext3 AFAIR.
