Only the X server starts and displays its x cursor. In the log files: first, gdm-simple-greeter throws this: Gdk-WARNING: cannot open display: later on gdm-simple-slave throws: WARNING: Unable to connect to display :1 the last message alternates with the message: DEBUG: GdmSlave: Server is ready - opening display :1 after a while shows this: gdm: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 8.124 seconds the gdm-simple-slave and gdm messages described above then start anew with the next display port (:2) and this repeats till port 5, when the maximum number of X display failures is reached. The X server is still running at this point (as the X cursor moves when moving the mouse). All this can be seen in the /var/log/messages file. The graphic adapter used in this machine is the following: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. On the first machine the bug happens when the "unichrome" driver was used in the xorg.conf. After changing to "vesa" it works alright. When changing back to the "unichrome" driver it still works fine. After rebooting the system while still using the unichrome driver the X server won't start at all. Restarting the X server with the vesa driver works, again. Now when restarting the machine with the vesa driver the same phenomena as in the summary of this bug occures. The machine with the S3 unichrome vga adapter is a Lenovo 3000 J Series.
