[Bug 489176] New: powersave can no longer change CPUfreq after update
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=489176 Summary: powersave can no longer change CPUfreq after update Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: All OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Mobile Devices AssignedTo: zoz@novell.com ReportedBy: bugs@singvogel.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Konqueror/3.5; Linux) KHTML/3.5.9 (like Gecko) SUSE I'm running a HP Compaq nx8220 laptop, which is avail in the SUSE labs as well. Before the update of packages "hal", "powersave", "dbus", I was able to change the CPUfreq on this laptop via command line tool "powersave" or the KPowerSave applet. After the update it's no longer to have a reduced CPU frequency on the same machine. The bad news is, that the machine needs to run the cooling fan of the CPU all the time in full mode, with disadvantage of loudness and hot temperatures on my knees. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install openSUSE-11.0 with installation media: see that changing CPUfreq works 2. Install updates of packages "hal", "powersave", "dbus", after March, 4th powersave -A Actual Results: liblazy (liblazy_dbus_send_method_call:97): Received error reply: Method "SetCPUFreqGovernor" with signature "s" on interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.CPUFreq" doesn't exist liblazy (liblazy_dbus_send_method_call:97): Received error reply: Method "SetCPUFreqGovernor" with signature "s" on interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.CPUFreq" doesn't exist Could not set CPUFreq policy to dynamic. Expected Results: "no output", and CPUFreq is changed. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The referenced sysfs files are missing on my machine: # ls /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/ cpuidle/ crash_notes microcode/ topology/ # cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/crash_notes 374f9dc0 So, I agree. Maybe the p4-clockmod was loaded accidently, this one uses the cpufreq interface, but let's the cpu miss clock ticks and should only be used in overheating case and best is not used at all. Most Celerons do a good job with processor C-states or not wasting much energy by HW design. If you still have the cpufreq capable kernel/distri installed, what does: cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_driver say? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm running the official pae kernel of the official distri kernel: # uname -a Linux sparrow 2.6.25.20-0.1-pae #1 SMP 2008-12-12 20:30:38 +0100 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux # ls /lib/modules/2.6.25.20-0.1-pae/kernel/arch/x86/kernel/cpu/cpufreq acpi-cpufreq.ko longhaul.ko powernow-k7.ko speedstep-lib.ko cpufreq-nforce2.ko longrun.ko powernow-k8.ko speedstep-smi.ko e_powersaver.ko p4-clockmod.ko speedstep-centrino.ko gx-suspmod.ko powernow-k6.ko speedstep-ich.ko ..but there is none of the above modules loaded in my system. The machine is getting very hot at the moment. And I know, that I could reduce this by enabling powersave cpufreq in the past. But this doesn't work any more after applying security updates. I won't say it's an kernel related issue, but the issue occured after the security update in the last 2 months (or so). I loaded the p4-clockmod module into my system, but still can't change the cpufreq to dynamic nor powersave anymore. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
