But to which file? A proper error message (shame on assert) is, in my opinion, part of the problem here. Running vdrift as root was disasterous, as it gave me a black screen with an underline character in the top left corner, with all key combos for getting me out taken, so I had to pull the plug from my computer. I then tried chmod -R a+w /usr/share/vdrift/data/ before running vdrift normally again, to no help at all.
