[Bug 428186] New: Kernel update should save previous kernel
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=428186 Summary: Kernel update should save previous kernel Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Beta 1 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Usability AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: coomac@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Currently, when a new kernel is installed, the last working kernel is completely removed from /boot. I can't begin to say how much of a usability nightmare this is for kernel testers. Regular users are impacted less often, but they certainly feel it in situations where a new kernel is released to the masses and it massively breaks something or other (happened a couple of months ago iirc). The post (or pre) kernel install script should be modified to change the name of the older kernel (Previous Kernel works well enough) in grub's menu.lst. The old kernel's rpm can be removed, but the vmlinuz and initrd images should be left in /boot so that the kernel remains bootable. Each time a new kernel is installed, the old number 1 kernel is shifted to number 2 and the old number 2 kernel images are removed. This way, a working kernel is always available. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
