[Bug 619803] New: console resolution far too high, font unreadable
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=619803 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=619803#c0 Summary: console resolution far too high, font unreadable Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: RC 2 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: dieter.jurzitza@t-online.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; de; rv:1.9.2.4) Gecko/20100513 SUSE/3.6.4-153.5 Firefox/3.6.4 After installation of openSUSE 11.3 RC2 the console font is way too small, the selected resolution way out of what is practical (similar to X11, see bug 619801). When specifying no "vga" line on the boot-commandline the resolution is being switched to the useless variant cloes to immediatly after the initial ramdisk has been loaded. This ought to be configurable somehow and at least should not be selected too high as default. I am using a Radeon 4350 graphics card Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. use a 21'' monitor as my ELSA ECOMO 750 2. install opensuse 11.3 3. try to read something on the console :-( Actual Results: see above Expected Results: see above -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm not aware of any tools to figure out the current resolution on the console. Depending on that you would need to load an appropriate font. What if you switch the resolution in X? Then you would need to load a different font on the console. These are all issues nobody (also upstream) didn't think about when developing KMS. I'm afraid you need to disable KMS ('nomodeset') if you still need to rely on Linux console. ==> WONTFIX -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=619803 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=619803#c2 --- Comment #2 from Dieter Jurzitza <dieter.jurzitza@t-online.de> 2010-07-05 19:59:34 UTC --- Well, well Mr. Dirsch. grub nomodeset sets no mode - no xorg.conf, no configuration, no acceleration. sax2 has disappeared. X -config creates nothing but crap (the generated xorg.conf does not work). Really. This is how I expected the future to be. Build a car, the only speed it can run at is 200MPh and no way to get it run at a decent speed but to remove three out of four cylinders :-( So, the vast majority of users still having tube screens promoting high resolutions that are not making real sense or those people being visually impaired are being forced to live with what is provided. Besides nomodeset there could easily be a "maxmodeset" or a "usevga" or whatever that allows some configuration on the console. Just my two cents here. Any location to comment on this upstream? Brave new world.
