[Bug 222756] New: Use less aggressive wording for warning about media version
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222756 Summary: Use less aggressive wording for warning about media version Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 2 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: federico@ximian.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com If I use a mini-ISO from a different version to boot, and then install over NFS, I get wording similar to this: You are using boot media from a different version. Your bug reports may be worthless. "Worthless" is pretty unfriendly here. Can we use something softer? Can we tell the user what may *not* work if he uses mismatched media? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

And besides, the normal case to get this warning is from one Beta of the same release to the next Beta. In this case, we really _mean_ it like that: Those bug reports are really worthless. Even worse, they tend to consume precious development resources at the worst possible of times to go after bogus bug reports. We had that many, many times. That's why that warning is there. The only alternative I see is to flatly refuse to continue in that scenario. All kinds of crazy things may happen, resulting in all kinds of weird bug reports. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

First, the check is only active during beta test. With RC1 yesterday I disabled it. It is not exactly clear what kind of bugs could be affected, otherwise I would have stated them. But if you continue to get bugreports that were long ago fixed but people don't notice because they continue to use the old boot media, at some point you really don't want that any longer (to put it neutrally). So I put that warning in. And, yes, I want it sounding mean. And yes, it _is_ configurable to make a hard stop instead of just a warning. And sure enough, when I _did_ make it stop once (because it was really necessary to get an up-to-date boot iso) people jumped up and down. So well, at least some fun came out of it. ;-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
