[Bug 244460] New: Wrong content of /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state at FSC Amilo M1425
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=244460 Summary: Wrong content of /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state at FSC Amilo M1425 Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: marco@sorich.de QAContact: qa@suse.de The content of this "file" stays at "state: closed" after closing and opening the lid during system is running. When I reboot the system, it shows corretly "state: opened" but after closing and opening the lid it stays at wrong state. My configuration is: * OS: SUSE 10.2 * Kernel: 2.6.18.2-34-default * Laptop: Fujitsu Siemens Amilo M1425 On same laptop I still have an installed SUSE 9.3. In this version, I think it works fine. Anyway I've never had problems to switch to Syspend to RAM mode automatically after closing lid like now in 10.2. Do you need any more information, any command outputs, any log, any comparision between 9.3 and 10.2? Is it a kernel bug at all or may it be some other problem (e.g. missconfiguration of pm-utils or something like this)? If you still have a 9.3 dmesg output this could help also. Does the rest of the ACPI subsystem work fine? (battery, thermal, cpufreq,..) If you do a: tail -f /var/log/acpid then close and open the lid, do you get lid events? Does the state change if you close the lid: sleep 5; # close lid and wait longer than 5 secs cat /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state # open lid again and have a look... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=244460 ------- Comment #7 from marco@sorich.de 2007-02-10 13:41 MST ------- Hi, I added the requested outputs and informations as attatchment. I found out that SUSE 9.3 has the same problem, that lidstate remains closed in proc-filesystem, although it is in contrast to bugdescription. Sorry for the wrong information I gave earlier. I thought it should work at SUSE 9.3 because I configured SUSE 9.3 to switch to Suspend to RAM mode automatically after closing lid. But although I configured it in SUSE 10.2 too (like http://en.opensuse.org/Suspending_when_closing_the_laptop_lid_in_SUSE_10.2) it still doesn't work. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=244460 ------- Comment #10 from trenn@novell.com 2007-02-15 01:54 MST ------- Best is you install the kernel with: rpm -ivh kernel-xy.rpm --nodeps --force Not sure whether you have to adjust /boot/grub/menu.lst by hand and add a new boot entry that points to the newly installed kernel, AFAIK this is done automatically since 10.2. Like that, if you boot your old kernel, everything should be the same as before. If you boot the new kernel, wlan or whatever kmp modules you need could be broken. This can be fixed by reinstalling kmp packages later (the dependencies you see). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

But the reported error, the wrong content of /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state, is still wrong. After the laptop boots up the state is opened - correctly. But after closing and reopening lid it stays closed. Result: Computer still does not enter S3 state automatically on closing lid. @ Thomas R.: No problem for me to wait some weeks. But they stated to use nolapic boot parameter to "not let the silent mode button freeze the machine" This could be an older kernel.., but maybe it's related. In the dmesg of 10.2 there is a line: ACPI Error (dsopcode-0481): Attempt to CreateField of length zero [20060707] This comes from libata/disk subsystem and should be fixed in next kernel update.
From dmesg I see some s2disk cycles. Does this only happen after a suspend to disk has been done?
The next kernel update for 10.2 should come out soon (about a week or so). But the problem does still occur. After closing and opening lid /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state remains "State: closed". But after reboot it is correctly "state: open". Also closing lid first time after reboot results in switching to suspend to ram mode (as configured) but next time closing lid doesn't switch laptop to suspend mode.
