[Bug 434618] New: gigabyte ga-g31mf-s1 board unusable for recent opensuse releases - 11. 1 beta2 - reboot/reset during bootup from install media
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=434618 Summary: gigabyte ga-g31mf-s1 board unusable for recent opensuse releases - 11.1 beta2 - reboot/reset during bootup from install media Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Beta 2 Platform: i386 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: abittner@stud.fh-heilbronn.de QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- this will be probably rather a bigger bugreport, and/or related to multiple areas in the opensuse development efforts. i tried to get a gigabyte ga-g31mf-s2 mainboard running with opensuse 11.1 beta2 (x86) from downloaded dvd install media. http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Overview.aspx?ClassValue=Motherboard&ProductID=2756&ProductName=GA-G31MF-S2 basically i am failing to use this board with all the recent opensuse versions with various serious problems all the way back to opensuse 10.2 10.2 was the latest version that i could actually make running on this board, install and boot up in a usable manner. all newer (10.3, 11.0, 11.1) versions give me loads of errors and annoyances. lets start with 11.1 beta2: booting up from dvd install media (also tried safe kernel, with f5 or whatever in grub from dvd media bootsector) gives me some quick loglines of the kernel booting, and then the last thing i see is i think the "starting udev...." or something like that... after that, the machine instantly resets/re-POSTs again and boots all over again from dvd-install media and so on..... is there a way to save these logmessages, or to make the screen freeze instead of reset/reboot during the failure? -------- for 10.3, and 11.0 i have managed to use the install media (x86 dvd iso image), which boots fine and displays the graphical yast2 screens, i select some basic kde package selection for install, basic partitioning and int installs a while. after the first reboot into the installed opensuse system the problems start, as there is some kind of debug output (x86 registers and stuff...) during the kernel bootup messages, and i think its somehow driver or kernel related, some messages about agp-gart (intel gart whatever, unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address...) and such appear..... the machine hangs a while there but usb-keyboard for example works and i can scroll back and forth in these partially displayed logmessages from boot, and after a while it boots into x/kde/displaymanager but its all corrupted and unusable... i also see like five to 8 modprobe processes which are somehow related to the sound driver which never finish and cant be killed either on all these opensuse versions. basically it seems that this intel chipset is unusable with the latest opensuse versions :( i have managed to generate logfiles for 10.2, 10.3 and 11.0, partly in messed up states, maybe the logs helpto figure out whats wrong with the kernel/gart/drivers and whatsoever. the mainboards bios is up2date, nothing fancy, some core2 duo E7200 is the processor, 1gigabyte of ram, nothing fancy. maybe we need to divide this bugreport later on into several parts, like sound, gart or whatever..... thanks for any help already. regards. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

what do the kernel.org guys mean by regression exactly?
regression is when something broke which worked before. so if you could use previous linux kernels without problems and have problems with later versions, that`s a regression. mind that reply in kernel bugzilla -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
