Steps to reproduce: 1. Click the NM icon and select Network Settings > Wireless. 2. Click "Use as Hotspot" and confirm the pop-up, then enter the root password. Almost immediately, the following information is shown in the Network Settings dialog: * Security (in my case WEP) * Network Mame (in my case, machine's hostname) and * an (automatically generated?) security key 3. Click Options next to the Hotspot button and enter the root password to continue. 4. Switch to the Wireless Security tab, check "Show Key" and try to change the key. Upon typing, the Save button becomes inactive and is greyed out so that is is not possible to save the changes. Any other options (for example the Connection name" at the top of the dialog can be changed but as soon as you touch the key, the Save button is deactivated. Does NM automatically check which encryption types are supported by the WLAN card in the machine and select the best one? Or how is it possible that WEP is automatically set? If that is a NM feature that's OK for me, as long as I can change the encryption by clicking the Options button. When creating an Ad-Hoc Network (Hotspot) with GNOME Network Manager, the encryption and the key are created automatically and shown in the Network settings dialog, but it is not possible to change them.
Steps to reproduce:

The WEP 40/128-bit key restrict a number of ASCII characters, such as you need input 5, 10 or 13 characters then the 'Save...' button will be active. So it's not a bug.
Does NM automatically check which encryption types are supported by the WLAN card in the machine and select the best one? Or how is it possible that WEP is automatically set?
I thought it was made by gnome-control-center, just make it more convenience for users, the NM not set it automatically. I'll dig the source code on it.
If that is a NM feature that's OK for me, as long as I can change the encryption by clicking the Options button. But that changing the network key is not possible for a Hotspot clearly is a bug IMHO.

Hi Bin Li,
thanks for the information in c#2 (about WEP 40/128-bit key) - I usually do not use WEP (because of weak security), therfore I didn't know about the restriction regarding the password length (will add that to the docs).
Regarding c#3: I'm perfectly fine with automatically generating a key for whatever encryption method is set. I agree that it is good practice (as long as the user can change the password if wanted, which is possible).
My question rather focused on the following: Does the system automatically detect which abilities my network card has? If yes, does it then select the *best* encryption method? And does it automatically generate a key for whatever encryption method is set?
For example, if the network card is able to support a higher encryption (WPA or WPA2), would this encryption automatically be used for the Hotspot (instead of WEP)? And would a key also automatically be generated for WPA or WPA2 in that case? No, it just use the WEP in gnome-shell, no automatically detect, you can set
