It shows there is enough memory. The message in comment 0 does not even exist in our 10.2 grub. So you are still using an < 10.2 grub (and those can't work with such large files). The advice they give in the forum mentioned in comment 2 does basically upgrade grub manually. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=230860 ------- Comment #9 from pgunreben@lucent.com 2007-02-14 09:54 MST ------- Before starting the reinstall, I did some experiments with the existing installation. Re-inserting the line gfxmenu (hd0,1)/boot/message in menu.lst caused the error to pop-up again. I've replaced the message file with a message file from a 10.1 installation and grub told me that this file was in the wrong format. I checked stage2 in the following way:
rpm -q grub grub-0.97-40 rpm -V grub diff -b /boot/grub/stage2 /usr/lib/grub/stage2
After reverting to the previous message file and executing the command grub-install /dev/hda the gfxmenu showed up as it should without error message. I'm reinstalling the computer currently to check whether this problem shows up again. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=230860 ------- Comment #10 from pgunreben@lucent.com 2007-02-14 10:49 MST ------- After reinstalling the computer, this problem does not show up anymore. It seems that grub was/is not properly installed during the installation process. The fresh installation uses the previously installed grub (SUSE 10.1) at least partly. To check this problem in some more detail, I'm currently installing another computer, which was also installed with SUSE 10.1. Keep tuned ... BTW, I'm using autoyast to install the computers. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=230860 ------- Comment #11 from pgunreben@lucent.com 2007-02-15 02:55 MST ------- I've discovered, that autoyast installs grub on the root partition if you don't specify a device for the bootloader. In my case: y2log_bootloader: .. Running "install --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0,1) (hd0,1)1+18 p (hd0,1)/boot/grub/stage2 /boot/grub/menu.lst"... succeeded .. However, the stage1 of the previous bootloader was located in the master boot record and is not overwritten. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The 'no memory' message can only appear with stage2 < 10.2. But stage2 from 10.1 would not complain about a 10.1 graphics file. So maybe you were using a stage2 from 10.0? Anyway this is a thing to be fixed in the yast2 bootloader code. And judging from comment 2, this is not an autoyast specific issue. Olaf, is that still your area? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=230860 ------- Comment #13 from pgunreben@lucent.com 2007-02-16 01:27 MST ------- .. my two cents: In previous SUSE releases, the grub was installed in the MBR. It seems that the SUSE 10.2 installs grub in the root partition and not in the MBR anymore. At system boot, stage1 of the previous bootloader (in the MBR) will be executed and will attempt to load its next stage (referenced by block?). If this is successful, the system will boot using the old boot loader, but will use the new configuration files (in /boot/grub). As I'm not an expert in grub, please check whether my assumptions are correct. When installing grub in the partition, we'd need to check, whether there's already a bootloader in the MBR, needn't we? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

We should leave the mbr untouched whenever possible. This is possible in many cases, depending on the system configuration. Of course we'll have to replace the mbr by a generic one, whenever we do this. For some reasons this doesn't always work - this is what this bug is about. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
