[Bug 681511] New: openSUSE:11.4/xpdf-poppler: Bug
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=681511 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=681511#c0 Summary: openSUSE:11.4/xpdf-poppler: Bug Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE.org Version: unspecified Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: BuildService AssignedTo: pgajdos@novell.com ReportedBy: mario.natiello@math.lth.se QAContact: adrian@novell.com Found By: Community User Blocker: --- 1. xpdf starts with Outline window per default, even when not needed. 2. when printing, it ends the printout with one additional blank page. 3. Outline window has iso-8859-1 instead of utf-8 (there is a patch for that in xpdf:s homepage but it works on a older version). Let me know if there is some output info needed to handle this bug. Hallo. This one is solved. The appearence of the blank document-index column when not needed is solved. The following problems persist: * Problems on the document index with non-english characters (accents, swedish letters). * No printout (neither the extra blank page, nor the desired page). Thanks, M. Yes, I didn't notice that before, since I try to use only xpdf. KDE:s okular also displays the table of contents wrongly. So perhaps the issue is not a xpdf problem but a problem with the creator of the pdf-file (in this case dvipdfm) ? Thanks, M. Regarding to printing: that problem I also cannot reproduce:
------- short-testcase.tex ---------------- \documentclass[8pt]{letter}
\begin{document} first page \newpage second page \newpage third page \end{document}
This problem persists. I run pdflatex on this file and open the 3-pages pdf file with xpdf. When printing from xpdf I get 4 pages, the last one empty. Printing with lpr, lp or from okular gives just three pages as it should be. This problem started when I upgraded to SuSE 11.4. Before that, xpdf printed correctly. I wouldn't say it is a printer problem since lp and lpr from the command line or okular they all print properly. I wouldn't say it is a problem with the document, since this document, as well as any pdf downloaded from the web show the same behaviour: xpdf prints always one extra page, any other printing method doesn't. Also vice versa, thanks to you.

Hmm.. I assume you use some of lp* command while printing from xpdf (see print dialog).

While I am using factory (upcoming 12.1) at work, I have retried with private comp running 11.4 and another printer, again I am not successful to reproduce it. 11.3's xpdf-poppler is only slightly different from 11.4's; you can try install exact 11.3's xpdf-poppler built for 11.4 here (some old problem may reappear with this rpm): http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/pgajdos/openSUSE_11.4/ But I doubt that's it. Sorry, but I can't debug problem that doesn't occur for me. What happens when you print to ps file using xpdf and looking at it with gv for example? What happens when you print this ps file? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

you can try install exact 11.3's xpdf-poppler built for 11.4 here
Hi. 11.3's xpdf-poppler and 11.4's behave in the same way. Actually, I had 11.1 before moving to 11.4, so it is a quite old product... Here are the results. I use the test-file you wrote in comment 28, generated with pdflatex. Three pages, I try to print only page 1. a. lp -P 1 test.pdf prints out ONE page. b. pdftops test.pdf; lp -P 1 test.ps prints out ONE page. c. printing from xpdf, pages 1 to 1, print-command lp prints out TWO pages. d. printing from xpdf, print to ps generates a test.ps d.1. lp -P 1 test.ps prints out TWO pages. d.2. gv test.ps displays exactly three pages d.3. printing from gv (with lp) prints out TWO pages. So it seems to be something about how xpdf manipulates the pdf file prior to printing. I have the test.ps generated by xpdf-poppler both 11.3 and 11.4 as well as test.ps generated from the command line with pdftops test.pdf. They are called test-orig.ps, test113.ps and test114.ps the two last differ little among themselves. Both have a "true" where the original file has a "false". See attachement. M. d. printing from xpdf, print to ps generates a test.ps d.1. lp -P 1 test.ps prints out TWO pages.
This doesn't happen to me with two printers (one of them Cannon i560, no automatic double-sided print), neither with test113.ps, test114.ps nor test-orig.ps you provided! (In reply to comment #30)

Yes, here lies the problem. Although it is unclear who is to blame... I assume that if you print from xpdf to a ps file and if you convert from the command line with "pdftops myfile.pdf" then you also get this difference "true" vs "false" in the ps-files. It occurs when the ps-file invokes the internally defined command pdfSetup. In the present case, the line reads: 596 842 true pdfSetup (or false) In such a case, we have 2 issues: a. My printer is sensitive to the true/false difference and yours is not. I use a HP ColorLaserJet 2605, run via cups with hplip. b. For some reason poppler-pdftops and pdftops from the command line give different outputs when it comes to invoke pdfSetup in the final ps-file. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Hi, excelent, thanks! Please note, that fix for printing issue will not appear in 12.1's xpdf-poppler. But it is possible to take it from X11:Utilities build for 12.1, as soon as 12.1 is out. (I can provide you or anyone else with link, if you ask me for that.) Mario, I would like to thank you for your cooperation, it was a pleasure to work with you. Whenever you will have problem with xpdf-poppler, don't hesitate to file a new bugreport and assign to me.
