[Bug 472768] New: ntp init script can block boot
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=472768 Summary: ntp init script can block boot Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: andi-nbz@firstfloor.org QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0) Gecko/2008061600 SUSE/3.0-0.2 Firefox/3.0 I just had a system not come up with sshd because it couldn't access the ntp server to sync the time at boot. The ntpd script was then blocking forever and preventing sshd from starting. The problem wasn't not accessing the ntp server, but blocking forever on that. Reproducible: Didn't try Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

WIth the recipe it should be easily reproducable for interested parties by just setting an appropiate iptables rule early in boot. I'm not sure what your point is regarding the IP: even if a numeric IP works it would be still a bug because non numeric NTP servers should be certainly allowed. Also it sounds rather unlikely to me because the DNS resolver does not normally block forever. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

All my external ntp servers are specified numerically. I do not have external connectivity during boot (i.e. I use smpppd to connect manually). If the problem happens ntpd hangs and all initscripts depending on "$time" are not executed (which is correct behaviour, ntpd should not hang) and since the startup script also hangs local login is not possible. I think I have once observed a hanging ntpd to resume after several minutes. On an hanging boot login is possible via ssh and a killall of ntpd makes the boot continue. However I have not been able to reliable reproduce the ntpd hangs (most of the time boot works normally). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Even when ntpd is running it often reports that it can't reach the external ntp servers although I don't experience any network problems, e.g. # ntpq -p remote refid st t when poll reach delay offset jitter ============================================================================== *LOCAL(0) .LOCL. 10 l 53 64 377 0.000 0.000 0.001 ptbtime2.ptb.de .PTB. 1 u 232 256 7 51.906 288.126 194.971 ntp2.inrim.it .UTCI. 1 u 181 256 7 80.542 195.899 122.186 ntp1.sth.netnod .PPS. 1 u 183 256 7 68.203 67.260 194.463 ntp1.sda.t-onli 172.30.33.33 2 u 176 256 7 45.814 191.341 123.242 Note the "reach" column. I also really hate it when I type ntpdate it gives me a mouthful of a very complicated command line to type in instead of just doing that. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
