http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=567129 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=567129#c0 Summary: Bad sound quality with X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro. Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Sound AssignedTo: tiwai@novell.com ReportedBy: mhondoz@mhondoz.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=334145) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=334145) Sound output recorded from another PC User-Agent: Opera/9.80 (Windows NT 6.1; U; en) Presto/2.2.15 Version/10.10 The sound on a fresh 11.2 installation is of bad quality (sounds like a radio out of tune). Have tried to fix it with help from the openSUSE forum: http://forums.opensuse.org/hardware/428215-sound-problems-11-2-x64-x-fi.html The sound works when using the same PC with Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows XP. I have attached the output alsa-info.sh when running openSUSE, and from Ubuntu 9.10 (sound working). Also attached file with sound recorded from another PC. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot computer 2. Go to KDE multimedia settings 3. Play test sound Actual Results: The sound is of bad quality. Expected Results: Normal sound quality. Hardware information: Asus A8N SLI Premium mainboard, AMD X2 CPU The sound worked on openSUSE 11.1 when I compiled the X-Fi driver myself. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

To be sure, could you install kernel-default or kernel-pae instead of kernel-desktop and check any difference? Also, are you using pulseaudio on 11.2? If yes, is PA used on any other good-working systems, too? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

For pulseaudio, I believe the default install and when booting 11.2 on a Live USB stick uses pulseaudio. An advice in the forums said to remove it. So I have tested both with and without pulseaudio with the same result (bad sound). When testing Ubuntu on a Live USB stick the sound works, and I believe pulseaudio is used there (seems so from the attached alsa-info file, but I am not sure). -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It's interesting to know whether it's a driver code issue or a kernel core issue. Please try to install 11.1 kernel parallel first. You can simply do like rpm -ivh kernel-default-*.rpm --force *not* to replace the currently installed kernel package. Then install alsa-driver-kmp on OBS multimedia:audio:KMP repo for 11.1 (or 11.1-update). See whether XFi is detected and works in that situation. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Can you elaborate? How can I install an 11.1 kernel in parallel? Should I add a 11.1 repo, or can I download it as an .rpm first and then install? Trying the rpm -ivh command does not seem to do anything..? As for Ubuntu and versions, I do not know anything else than it works when booting from the 9.10 USB live stick without any extra installation or configuration. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Then installed with: sudo rpm -ivh kernel-default-*.rpm --force I will attach the console output from this operation, there seem to be some error messages about missing ext4 modules. Then I downloaded alsa-driver-kmp-default-1.0.22.1.20100115_2.6.27.42_0.1-1.1.x86_64.rpm from http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/multimedia:/audio:/KMP/openSUSE_11... and installed it. On reboot I chose the newly installed 2.6.27.42 kernel, but during boot the splash screen goes away and there is an error message which I believe has something to do with ext4 that is not supported by the 11.1 kernel. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
