[Bug 210476] New: startx with Xserver options give "No startx installed" error
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=210476 Summary: startx with Xserver options give "No startx installed" error Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Alpha 4 Platform: i686 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X11 Applications AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: linux-clusters@mindspring.com QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com Now that startx is located in /usr/bin I cn run startx from the command line but if I try to include some options to the Xserver on the same command line I get an error about: No startx installed i.e. if I run: startx or /usr/bin/startx everything works fine and X startx with whatever desktop environment I have setup. However if I try to do: startx -- -dpi 96 or /usr/bin/startx -- -dpi 96 -screen Screen1 I get the above error. I am not sure but I think there is some strange interaction with the wmlist command or something else that is sourced from within this version of the startx script. Previous versions of startx allowed the user to append a "--" to the end of the command invocation line and that signafied that the options following that were to be passed to the Xserver. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=210476 ------- Comment #2 from linux-clusters@mindspring.com 2006-10-10 23:55 MST ------- I checked this by upgrading to Alpha5 but I still get this. I traced it down to the following lines in the startx script: --- ./usr/bin/startx 2006-10-10 22:42:51.000000000 -0700 +++ /usr/bin/startx 2006-10-09 14:00:53.000000000 -0700 @@ -123,7 +123,7 @@ sysserverrc=/etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc defaultclient=xterm # set X Server accordingly (Xorg/Xgl) -defaultserver=/usr/bin/$DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER +defaultserver="" defaultclientargs="" defaultserverargs="" clientargs="" It seems that the /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager file that was created on my system from the initial Alpha4 install did not set a DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER variable so prior to my above modifications (after upgrading to Alpha5) it was putting out an error about: /var/tmp/usr/bin/startx -- -dpi 100 xauth: creating new authority file /home/green/.serverauth.3774 /usr/bin/: /usr/bin/: is a directory xinit: Server error. Because the $DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER was not set the defaultserver line was getting set to /usr/bin One other thing, I discovered during the process of tracing this down that the authority file it claims to be creating is not actually getting created. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=210476 ------- Comment #3 from linux-clusters@mindspring.com 2006-10-11 00:52 MST ------- BTW, I am still not sure what was going on with the original startx script that was installed with the Alpha4 install. I was not able to trace down why that "No startx installed" thing was occuring prior to my latest upgrades to Alpha5. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
