[Bug 770605] New: update makes laptop run hotter
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=770605 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=770605#c0 Summary: update makes laptop run hotter Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: dutchkind@txoriaskea.org QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:13.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/13.0.1 On my samsung 5 series ultrabook I upgraded opensuse 12.1 to 12.2 beta with kernel 3.4.2-1 and it started running 5 to 10 degrees C cooler. Now yesterday there was this update with 900+ packages and among those a newer kernel 3.4.4-1. Now the system is back at the temp values of 12.1. Where does this regression come from, the kernel or KDE? Now my system runs at high 50 (57-60) when only firefox open, the previous version at low 50 (50-55). Windows runs at around 50 with the same kind of "almost idle" load which is still hot compared to my old duo2core but seems to be normal for the i5 processor, but it would be nice to keep the temperatures low because it gets pretty uncomfortable on a lap. I guess it has not to do with processor P- (frequency) or C- (idle) states. Maybe a specific device is powered on by default which was off before (wireless, bluetooth, a USB device sent to suspend, ...). Best is you google how you can tune these devices to be on/off. Via graphic tools or even better directly through /sys/ writes like: echo xy >/sys/... This avoids another error source (in the graphic tools). Let's keep this bug open for a while for documentation. Possibly others see similar issues. I won't be able to help much, just give the one or other advise as this problem probably is a very platform/HW specific one. If you still have the installation source of a working distribution, you can try to install the kernel from there: rpm -ivh /../../suse/x86_64/kernel-desktop.rpm --force With rpm -ivh the kernel is installed additionally and you can still boot the latest kernel. Remove (only the newly installed one) by specifying the exact version you installed: rpm -e kernel-desktop-3.x.x-xx... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=770605 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=770605#c2 --- Comment #2 from David Kerkhof <dutchkind@txoriaskea.org> 2012-07-27 13:27:08 UTC --- I don't have previous sources and haven't been able to retrieve a kernel rpm from the live cd, but I can install a disk image with the older kernel and see what happens and then install the newer kernel there as well. I will post what I find. In the mean time I have been trying to figure out how to lower my temperatures, but somehow it just doesn't happen, while when I boot into Windows 7 the temperatures stay much cooler. It seems that anything that does something in opensuse uses cpu and then I see the temperature rise immediately, and it doesn't matter which cpu governor I set. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Did you use these on 12.1 as well? It may be some fiddling, but you should be able to find some nice info how to install and use these. Also double check the processor utilization with top. Is there a looping processes, keeping a core busy? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

(This ultrabook only has the intel graphics gpu and no extra cards. My daughter's laptop has this nvidia optimus stuff and therefor I know I had to stay far away from that combination for the time being using linux.) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I will further investigate. Any update? Best try with 12.3.

I do note that the latest firefox does run cooler, and with opensuse 12.3, which was installed a few weeks ago via an upgrade, it seems to do okay. I just have to learn to live with the fact the latest intels run by design much hotter than the old duo2cores. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
