owa server in settings was configured as http://owa.xxx.yy/exchange and this URL is working through browsers, username was configured like username (not username@domain, or something)

Doesn't help. Evolution isn't parsing the URL properly and barfing internally, but giving the user a useless error message, I think. He may not have, but I have. Doesn't help. Evolution isn't parsing the URL properly and barfing internally, but giving the user a useless error message, I think.
See bugs 231388, 238694, and also 235259 (the last isn't exactly related, but close).
Can you get E2K_DEBUG traces of Evolution process? In IMAP mode, it gets to that server just fine.
