[Bug 293100] New: Secondary HDD as installation source
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=293100 Summary: Secondary HDD as installation source Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.2 Status: NEW Keywords: Customer_Relevant Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: hylton@conacher.co.za QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: Customer Allow the DVD contents as well as any downloaded patches to be saved into a location of the users choice ie a 2ndry HDD, so that the patches/deltas etc do not have to be downloaded again. The user can then use this location as an installation source as all the updates downloaded via opensuseupdater/Yast will be placed in this nominated location. If the user selects an external HDD as his storage source then the same package updates can be applied to multiple computers that are not networked to the internet. It also allows the ability to donate the DVD to someone as the source has already been copied and therefore allows for the faster adoption of the OS. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This new one you can leave on your disk as a directory or burn to new CD/DVD. 3. you can even use yast2-instserver module to setup nfs/http/ftp source from your local sources Is that sufficient, or is any feature still missing? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

There is nothing in YAST that hints that you can create a local installation source, other than ;installation sources, which just lists the ones already added/used. 2. Whilst you might know about the yast2-cd-creator, I do not and after just checking on Yast on KDE, did not find it as a listed option. 3. Again I do not find this yast2-instserver module to setup nfs/http/ftp source from my local sources on Yast(KDE). This feature is still missing, as although you have been able to identify the parts needed, a new user would not know of them. He would be told that there is a yast module to do it and they would go into Yast and find that the option is STILL not visibly available. My suggestion is to create a new icon under Yast:System or Yast:Software that says 'Create local install source'. If the user selects it the CD/DVD is requested and mounted and then copied to a location that the user specifies as his/her local installation source. A check box should indicate to the user, whilst creating the local source, that all downloaded patches/deltas/rpms that are downloaded via the online uopdate will also be stored in the local installation source. If the user decides not to create a local installation source of the initial CD/DVD, but that they may want to create a store of the updates downloaded via Yast online update on the local machine. This could be accomplished by adding a secondary icon or option under 'Create local installation source'. As an aside, if the user does a backup of his local installation source then they will have complete updated set of the software initially installed, provided there have been no additional patches released since they last did an online update. Once the user has established this local installation source, they will be able to specify it as an installation source. Should the user/admin require to reload the entire system, for whatever reason, then the boot manager will give the user a chance to either boot from Harddisk or complete a local reinstall. The local reinstall option will read the local update source and the initial CD/DVD image and the updates will be installed as thought the user had just inserted the CD/DVD in the DVD drive. Once this online reinstall has been done, and provided an online update was recently done, there should be no further online updates needed to bring the machine up to a fully patched state. I hope this fully answers your question. Further details on request. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The yast2-instserver does seem to meet the initial need of having a local installation source, however there is nothing mentioned on the initial screen or in the help, about including downloaded package updates/deltas and RPMs and being able to use them if a network install is initiated ie I assume if a network install is initiated would install the base packages and then have to connect to the internet and download the updates to the installed packages as opposed to updating from already downloaded patches on the installation source folder. The main aim of having the package updates stored in a central location is to save bandwidth and time, as I am sure many people/companies pay per MB of data they download, despite the time it takes them. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It's described in the help text in the repository manager. If it's not clear just tell me. Or you can use the inst-server Yast module to create a local copy. 2) I have added 'keeppackages' option to yast (see bug#402617) - all downloaded packages from the repository with keeppackages=1 are kept in /var/cache/zypp/packages directory (by default, can be changed in /etc/zypp/zypp.conf file). So you can copy the downloaded files to a HDD and either use it as a plaindir repository or you can create metadata using createrepo tool and use it as a standard repository. See 4) for some possible problems. 3) To comment #5: if a company pays per MB they should configure a caching proxy anyway (e.g. squid) so all traffic is cached, not only downloaded packages. 4) You can create a local mirror using rsync or other mirroring tools. I suggest using 'rsync -avp --delete rsync://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/update/11.1 .' for syncing 11.1 updates, it will very efficiently sychronize the repository. It should be regularly started from a cron job. Export the mirrored repo via FTP/HTTP... to the local network. This is the preferred way because the downloaded updates in 2) are needed just for that machine. It will work only if all machines have the _same_ installed packages, i.e. if you have KDE desktop then only KDE updates will be downloaded and if there is a machine with GNOME desktop the updates will be missing. 5) To comment #2: yast2-inst-server package is not installed by default, you have to install it additionally. 6) To comment #2: you can add an add-on product during installation, that can be a local mirror of the update source (in that case the URL have to be created manually). Summary: A copy of a repository can be created quite easily therefore I'm going to close the bug as WONTFIX (IMO creating a new yast module is not worth of doing it). As a CLI challenged user, the addition of a YAST module incorporating the CLI commands would be a nice touch to assist those who are CLI challenged to reap the same benefits out of the OS than their CLI savvy counterparts. I would then be able to do above points 1/2/3/4/6 via the GUI. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
