[Bug 536723] New: Add google chrome or chromium to distro
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=536723 Summary: Add google chrome or chromium to distro Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Factory Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jfrantzius@web.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US) AppleWebKit/532.0 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/3.0.197.11 Safari/532.0 .. or both! The easiest may be to snapshot chrome packages from what is listed at http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_YaST_Package_Repositories#Google_Linux_sof... for the release, and, as https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=531686&GoAheadAndLogIn=1 suggests, have the repo added (or mirrored?) with the distro. Complicated political implications probably lay ahead here. Maybe a full fledge OBS-build of chromium wouldn't take longer for somebody at Novell in the end, hoping that Google did a good job at providing Chromium sources. At least Chrome has superb performance (also on KDE4). If the user could somehow during install choose what to install as the standard browser, I'd find this an innovative choice for a Linux distribution. Probably too late for 11.2 since that's past Milestone 6. Let's assign to the owner of that package to decide whether to add this to Factory (but then only for 11.3) or stay in contrib. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

From a first glance, that Chromium build seems to work like a charm! Even the flash plugin, which didn't work for me at last with the Chrome build from Google.
That's great! -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

David is maintaining it together with Raymond. I think we can close this now. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Since there are no official Chromium releases by upstream, I agree that it would probably be easier to release Chrome instead in the same way Opera is released at the moment. This would minimize the work that needs to be done by the openSUSE community. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The chromium package is available from openSUSE:Factory:Contrib repository. Google folks are doing too many changes for inclusion into Factory, so we'll keep it there. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
