[Bug 723729] New: Yast 'SOUND' is almost impossible to use for a Normal User
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=723729 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=723729#c0 Summary: Yast 'SOUND' is almost impossible to use for a Normal User Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: All OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Usability AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: scott@aphofis.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-GB; rv:1.9.2.23) Gecko/20110920 SUSE/3.6.23-0.2.1 Firefox/3.6.23 In Yast>Sound the first screen opens with the current selection - Hopefully this was put in by auto detect during Installation. More often that not this part of Installation is skipped during a non-automated installation, mainly because there is no ability to identify and configure a Printer (Hardware) that is not directly attached. Whilst the change and manual configuration of Hardware Printers is magnificent; most users wants all hardware to auto-detect and auto-setup. I dont think we can get much better in Printer Setup.... Because a user may baulk at setting up a printer that is not directly attached they may skip the entire setup of the Hardware during Installation. This leaves the user to have to not only setup the printer; easy; but to try to setup the Sound and God help anyone who changes their monitor which has inbuilt sound. The short of it is - Whilst the Installation Setup can almost always auto configure the sound, Yast is far from easy, nor automated and after looking at the first screen after ADD, most will pass out and never return and forget about it. If Installation can auto detect and Install, Why cant' Yast - As I said God help anyone who upgrades their old CRT Monitor to a flat screen with inbuilt speakers in the monitor OR just changes the brand/type/size. A few more adventurous users will go to the trouble of viewing all Hardware devices in Yast and then try to setup or ADD sound, but just how well could you go on Sound>Add>Show List of Kernel Modules>Next...only to find the next bit tries to automate discovery and setup but fails the discovery painfully bad. The Yast sound module is just not usable and I would suggest not able to auto install even IF you get the Sound Card Vendor and Sound Card Model correct. Just as we are having fun enter System Settings>Multi Media which sort of looks like yast but really only offers to switch the KDE Sound system of/on or change the Backend - What is a back end anyway to a user. And why would a user go into Yast>Sound when their Monitor changes...Chances are the Speakers just dont work as their is now 1 only Green input cable. As for fixing up a new Monitors display - lets not go their yet until we fix the ability to auto configure sound just as reliably as Installation and ADD the function - Please Check Your Speakers as We Believe They are Turned Off to the 'hardware 'TEST' button Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Try it yourself as see how well you go when you change Monitor AND the Sound input Changes as Well 2. 3. Actual Results: Sorry to be so hard on this Module but its just not usable. We all get a head start cause most of us have a degree in Computer Science, get and advanced USER to try this - I think we need to consider focus group actual testing of modules in System Settings and most of Yast -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

you oppened the bug against 11.3. With 11.4 (or 12.1), I have no problem.
There is *no* hardware detection against *speakers*, only against *sound card*. You may have a lot of jacks on one sound card (rear, front...), each have a different setup in the mixer. Use YaST, sound, *other* (in the bottom right), volume and see if you have some volume set. use the option "test" on the same place to hear the sound. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
