[Bug 326376] New: DNS hangs/errors with e1000
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=326376 Summary: DNS hangs/errors with e1000 Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: RC 1 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: adrian@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- I have still serious trouble with DNS using the latest kernel ("* Di Sep 18 2007" latest changelog entry). Please note that the same notebook has no trouble in 10.x network, but it has in 149.44.x network. We have seen the same problem with a workstation which got installed 10.3 snapshot from yesterday here in the 149.44. network. All 10.2 systems work still fine. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It seems only one of the broken systems is using e1000 (the workstation), my notebook uses the tg3 kernel module, but it has the same problems .... (maybe this is more a glibc problem ?) Hmm, I had a similar issue with my notebook during installing Beta3 (sky2 driver). The install was direct from a burned DVD and then the network test didn't work. All test on the console shows, that networking itself works (e.g. ssh), but DNS not, /etc/resolv.conf was OK and the request reached the nameserver machine, but didn't generate a response. Then I did a reboot and the issue was not longer reproducible. So I would say it has nothing todo with the card driver. Does a machine still show this behavior, maybe the DNS packets are somehow corrupted. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If yes then you could use tcpdump to look if here is any DNS activity on the interface: tcpdump -vvvv -n -i eth0 If this shows that here is a DNS request going out, but no response, it would be great if you find sombody with root access to the name server, who can run tcpdump or wireshark on it, to see if the request go to this machine and generate a response. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Only the 10.10.x ping did hang when I have the problems and continued later. So this points to a general network problem. But the question is why are only the two 10.3 system affected but non of the 10.2 systems in the room ? /etc/nsswitch.conf got configured to use only files and dns resolvements. avahi was not running (in fact both daemons do crash anyway on boot, so they have no effect). I observed meanwhile also hanging of pings to both networks (to 149.44.170.254 and 10.10.0.10). In general, I would say it is a generic broken network, but only 10.3 hosts seems to be affected and I hear about similar problems from other people in other networks (ro and thoenig both in 10.10.x network, but all with different hardware). The hanging DNS is most likely only a following problem, because no traffic wents over the wire at all. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

To rule out the network you could try to ping another host which is as well connected to the same local switch in your office. Keep also in mind that ping tries to resolve the name when using an IP address as ping target. This is a tcpdump file (you can process it with tcpdump -r) from the nameserver. The issue was directly after installation, also downloading the release notes doesn't work. The issue went away after I connected via ssh from a third machine. If I look at the tcpdump messages at the notebook, I always get UDP checksum errors also after the issue went away, I think because packets are captured before checksums are written. Meanwhile I installed several 10.3 nodes and never run into this problem (at least 3 times the node had a e1000). So does the problem still exist (even with openSuse 11.0) ? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So I can not reproduce this anymore easily. I have also not seen the issues in our floor anymore. Dunno what changed, but I think we can close this. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
